Kept the 928's, but recently acquired a Ferrari 612. In my opinion, what the 928 would be if it were being made today:

2nd generation Jaguar XKR coupe. Good exterior and interior styling, 510hp, RWD, 2+2, under 4,000lbs, near 50/50 weight distribution, dual A-arm suspension, and starting to come down to a reasonable price. One of these gave my supercharged 928 a really good run.

Then there's also the XKR-S...

That's just my opinion, but one based on experience in ownership and observation of my friends with similar cars.
If Porsche decides to build a 2 door version of the panamera then that would be the successor for me.

Current production AM's do not have the presence or functionality of the 928. They are quite slow for their specs/engine size and the interiors are cramped in comparison to the 928. They also do not age well, see the Vanquish above - black rubber around the headlights and that hip crease. I have not yet seen the new Vanquish in person so will wait on that. The One-77 did everything right except the front and sounds great.

I saw an all black CGT a couple months back and even that did not impress anymore, looked like a blob, an inflated boxster. You really have to let some time pass from the first time you see one and hear the hype to get a real critical look at one, (same for girls). The 599's/458's kinda bit in person too.

Cars I like -- yellow and other interesting paint scheme new Camaro's, certain Mustangs -boss 302 LS, the original CLS, 348's, maybe the Tesla Model S, maybe the aventador, maybe the F12, maybe the new Corvette being unveiled tonight at 6:00, and maybe the new RR.

maybe even this

Don't see it, but I do see some OB 928 in the new F12, the low long front, the hatchback that doesn't extend must pass the rear wheels and the sweep to the body

I wasn't really talking about the body design, but it's position in the sports car market as one of the best grand tourers (if not the best).

Agree about the 612... Ask Mark Anderson how he liked his. I think he had it for 3 or 4 years. I think maintenance made the 928 look like a paupers car, but I am not positive about that. Perhaps it was just parts were expensive and difficult to get in.

I totally agree about the 612 (having put 5k miles on one)
I think it is exactly what the 928 would have become. It truly is a great daily driver. Easy to get in and out of, good ground clearance, quiet, plenty of room but yes some parts were stupid expensive like the $1k window switch.

The new XKR-S is both refined and mean as hell. Very nice GT car.

Would any of you even consider the (cough, cough) new Corvette?

The new LT1 should fit like a glove and looks like an awesome power plant.

Never dis the vette. It's done a terrific job in the last decade. I'm not saying it does not have its faults but the zo6 is an awesome machine
I'd still rather drive a 928 across country but they have their strong points

I've always owned an older Porsche that I could afford on a modest salary. I began with my 944, which I bought the summer I got my PhD. After 11 years I was able to upgrade to my 928 in 2010. I plan to keep it for about 10 years, so what Porsche will be ripe for the picking by then? It has to seat 4 as well, so probably a 911. I'd like a Panamera in theory, but it will still be too expensive I figure.

You might love the 991 - it's an awesome car, and the first 911-type that I consider truly better than a 928. Except it's not a hatchback, which makes it a lot less interesting to me.
