When comparing Aston Martins to GTS prices, you are getting close to an even trade. My brother has a Aegean Blue 2003 AM Vanquish that he is being offered @$40k wholesale with mileage in the mid 20s. One of the best looking car designs of all time and like the 928, has back seats, if you can call them that. The exhaust is tuned to sound mean at idle and wails at higher RPM. I have been discussing buying it from him, but I have way too much labor in my '84 Euro to let it go right now. Also, even though the AM is a true F1 style auto/manual, I still prefer the 3 pedals and a stick over paddles.

Gotta agree. Aston Martin all day from a looks viewpoint. The Vantage (with no rear seat) approaches close enough for me and with O5's going at 45K they are starting to look REAL attractive. Gonna be a "bucket list" item in the next couple years, I'm sure. BTW, good morning Doug.

The Alfa isn't too bad looking and has a great snarl to the exhaust note

For me too. Aston Martin wins hands down. It is not even a price issue, because as somebody noted the used ones have come down in price a lot. It's a style issue.

All the Porsches today have too much electronics on the dashboards. BMW is not interesting for me either. And Audi... Um... Let's just say not my taste... Not saying they are bad cars though.

I prefer really the 928 first. If I didn't have a GT good condition, I'd be looking for an Aston Martin... The dashboard even on the Vantage is a little too complex for me, but it's really quite good, all things considered. And AM is keeping it simple and somehow keeping the link to a racing tradition of sorts!

I have read this thread with interest for some time.

If the 928 was the most expensive, cutting edge, clean sheet design, innovative on so many fronts, I don't see how its "successor" could be anything but. 928 changed front engined GT driving forever, and all the cars mentioned, AM's, Maser's, Merc's, etc, have only tried to take those same elements further.

As much as I love the styling of the Alfa 8C (and there may not be a better looking modern car, ever), the underpinings just don't do it for me.

The Carrerra GT does. That's my pick. Dreaming of owning one someday, so I believe I will. Hope springs eternal.

I remember a 928 clubmeeting at the Amsterdam dealership of Porsche. They had an Aston Martin that was traded in for a Porsche. They didn't want to have it in the showroom because every time the car was started it would fill the entire showroom with blue smoke. The general impression aout the car was that the build quality was way below Porsche standards.

Panamera turbo would be a good replacement. But a 928 cannot be replaced. You need a V8 for the linear torque it provides. RWD so u can do burnouts but most importantly...timeless styling. It may have pop up headlights but the shape is something no other brands can match

Yeah, I didn't want to be a wet blanket for all the guys carrying on about the Astons, but you've nailed it here. Astons have a shocking reputation for reliability. When Porsche builds, they build something that can do mileage. Aston and the exotic Italians are very much a 2nd car for the weekends. That's just my opinion, but one based on experience in ownership and observation of my friends with similar cars.
If Porsche decides to build a 2 door version of the panamera then that would be the successor for me.

So I just made the plunge on the last day of the year for a great deal on a 13 Grant Turismo Sport. I will post some pics here. All I can say is the car is OUTSTANDING. It has 60 more hp than the car Randy and I drove and it is LOUD when the sport button is pushed. The overall feeling is much more enhanced than the 08. The sound is incredible. A gentlemans exotic just like the 928.

Another virtue a replacement to the 928 must have is to be beautiful. The 928 was and is to me one of the most beautiful designs. The Maserati certainly can hold its own. Here is a link to a video review of the new 2013 gran Turismo sport. Enjoy

Default 928 feel in a modern car

My testdrive:
Jaguar XK-8
This car does give the 928 feeling in a modern car. The similarity in the driving and layout of the car is so great that you feel even more respect for the design of the 928.

I've been eyeing XK-8's for years; however, the interior and auto transmission only have kept me away. The first gen XK-8 interior is TERRIBLE! The second gen XK-8 interior is better, but it's still no comparison to recent offerings from Maserati and Aston Martin.

Years ago I had a 90k mile s4 5-spd that I drove over to look at a low mile 2 year old Esprit V8. The Esprit was a lot faster, but in my 15 minute drive, I decided I liked the 928 more. The Esprit just didn't feel as solid as the Porsche and squeaked and shook over bumps. Through the years I have gone back and forth on buying one, but have not pulled the trigger. I guess I expected better fit/finish from a modern car. If I were to get one, I would go for a early S1 or S2 model. Not too fast, but super light and really raw.
