Your Next Car After the 928?

TVR Cerbera 4.5
The AJP8 engine is quite interesting, it's an old school V8 with SOHC that means it's very light, 121kg vs 264kg for the S4 engine, mainly because it's 16v and has a flat plane crank. It produces 420bhp (when set up properly) and it sits in a car weighing 1100kg, that means the power to weight ratio is almost double that of the S4. Unfortunately it also has valve shims rather than hydraulic tappets, so it definitely qualifies as 'high maintenance'. Even more annoyingly the combined oil and water pumps are sandwiched between the block and sump, worse still the timing cover can't be removed with the engine in situ - so you have to pull the engine to do most jobs.
The 4.5 Cerbera stats are quite impressive - 0-62mph in 3.9, topping out at 190+. Unfortunately build quality is in a different world to that of my S4. My S4 has 220k miles but it is in a far better condition than my 32k Cerbera, even though it is also 11 years younger. Chassis corrosion is a major issue, even though the fibreglass body is immune.
The main reason I bought the Cerbera was because I felt it was cruel continuing to track the S4, it was starting to get a little smoky on the track even though it uses virtually no oil on the road. I wanted something lighter, more powerful, more nimble. My gf hates it, whereas she loves the 928, and there's a good reason for that, the S4 is just so refined compared with the Cerbera which is incredibly raw. That's one reason why I'm keeping the S4, it really is a brilliant intercontinental grand tourer, the other reason is because of the emotional investment over the last ten years, and the unique history. But the adrenalin surges as soon as you start the engine in the Cerbera, you don't even have to move an inch.

Another Unimog... but this time a type U1300 Ambulance to convert to a camper. Mogs have torque tubes and are also over engineered, so it's almost like Mogs and 928s share some DNA.

Test by C&D calls ZL1 true GT car.
General Motors has made the Camaro into a true GT car—daily driver, long-range missile, and track-day special all in one.

With mods guessing they will be 700hp as the same motor is in the CTS-V

What car replaces the 928?
What is the car that comes closest to replacing the 928? I drove a special edition Jaguar XK today. It is slightly lowered and bigger wheels. According to the specification it has a V8 4.2L engine up front, approx 300 bhp and it has a hatchback. The sleek body also resembles the 928 quite a bit. Although I have not driven my or any 928 for 4 years, the driving experience was very similar to what I remember how a 928 drives. Perhaps because it was lowered a bit, which gives it a more sporty feel. Quite a car for the same money as a 928 GTS would cost now! Only the XK was a 2005 version while a 928 GTS would be 1194 or 1995...

The XK isn't as sporty as the 928, though. I think Jaguar is more luxury and Porsche, even with the GT, somewhat luxurious feel of the 928, is still an out and out sports car. Even with all things equal, I'd still take the GTS any day---modern day Jags just aren't what they were in the 60's.
Don't shoot me, but I think the CTS-V Coupe is pretty close in terms of form factor, utility, etc.

An XKR is supposed to have more than 400 bhp....I guess I didn't use all of it. I sounded great!

Yep.....but staying true to the V8.... The V8-Vantage... ultimate GT . And prices for the 06-08's are hovering around 1/2 of their original cost..

Wow, that looks a lot like Guards Red!
But I think you'd really want the 470/510 hp db9 engine to be proportionate to what 928 delivered in its' day. You can get a truck with the power of a Vantage V8 ...

A replacement would in my view have to be as radically different as the 928 in its time was. Remember that when the 928 entered the scene most people were still driving chrome bumbered 3 box saloons with tail lights screwed on instead of the round integrated shape with integrated bumpers with sunken tail lights. And the engine was special as well. As a kid, I was amazed by its overall appearance. I guess something as radically different as a Fisker comes close? Or Tesla? At least those are rare examples of cars that were designed from a clean sheet of paper as the 928 was, and pretty fast acceleration and new engine types. Or maybe a replacement has not come along yet... I will hang on to my 928 and other classics for now :-)
