I....
I got the opportunity to show it to my neighbor (not the one that died, (another thread, a couple weeks ago))
He has seen my car, but today he had interest in checking it out.
He said it looked good, and he remembered posters of this car from way back.
He was amazed at the engine. He said "I know how to work on cars, but where is the alternator ?"
His eyes really lit up when I told him the battery is in the back, under the spare tire.
Oh, I did explain to him that mine is a driver, but dependable, there are a lot of nicer 928's.
Also I dropped the name of the second owner,...he knows him.

Default Fixed Oil Leak at Dipstick Tube

Chasing a fugitive oil leak. It's been spotting for a year or so, started a month or three after the timing belt/WP/etc in Cali winter '14. I had looked a couple times but it seemed to be generally coming from the sump gasket, so I carefully snugged the bolts a little to see if that would help. It seemed to for a while but after a couple weeks there were spots on the floor again. Planned to do a OPG replacement this winter, for the 12 YO composite gasket I put in there the last time the MM's were replaced. At the beginning of summer this year I did a mini undercar cleanup in tthe front, sort of anticipating the winter work. Scrubbed the engine lowers, crossmember and the rack, suspension and the belly pan at the time. Yesterday I got a wild hair to look in there, and could easily see the trail of oil from the bottom of the dipstick tube, across the top of the sump towards the AC side, then trail back along there unitil it finally found a low spot about midway back on the side of the sump. Of course it trailed back from there a bit on the belly pan to finally drip just forward of the motor mount cooling duct.

So everything was recleaned under there, and a new o-ring fitted to the dipstick tube. This time the tube and o-ring were treated to wipe with Hylomar sealant. Then drove it about 50 miles south, including a few 100+ blasts to bed the o-ring. Back in the garage, no signs at all of any seepage.

Moral: It really does pay to keep everything clean. Leaks get found early, identified more easily, etc. Plus it's more fun to work on. Saved myself all the winter fun that goes along with dropping the rack and crossmember for an oil pan gasket replacement. I'll have to find something else to occupy my spare time while it's cold out.

Plasti-dipped my new-to-me Cup IIs (semi-crappy job of it...they look better than the painted scratched manhole covers that were on there before but if I still like the black when this crap comes off, I'll have them refinished professionally), re-positioned the adjustable drop links to the outer hole and replaced the chewed-up fuel return hose cover. I'm getting some rubbing when I go over bumps at the driver's side rear...I have a little ding at the center of the wheel arch and I think it has pushed the panel in a tad. Also, the button on my e-brake keeps launching itself across the car, I need to try thread locker or something on that thing.

Found out this morning a leak from the front of the car.

Few drops of red oil on the garage floor.

Found a leaking high pressure power steering hose.

Well... Ordered a new one.

Need to get everything's fixed before Frenzy!

on Monday I installed the old style MMs and an OPG without dropping the cross member,
it did take all day

Default Rear sock

I got one rear shock completed. It took an appalling amount of time to get the adjustment sleeve off the old shock! Maybe number 2 will go faster....

Drove it to work on Saturday. That got me motivated to organize parts that need to go back in.

WOW I have a lot of new parts.

Default Brake refurb

I sent my calipers to a UK specialist called Godspeed Brakes, for refurb and PCing. Had issues with late diagnosis of pitted pistons and then a broken CNC machine which meant it took 2 months, but the results are well worth it.

Stripped, plated cleaned and refitted with new screws, new connecting pipes, new seals, new stainless pistons. Then powder coated red.

Default Intake refresh

As the brake calipers took longer than expected I didn't want to waste any time so carried out an intake refresh, following Dwayne's extensive guide (many thanks, love your work!)

Started breaking down the engine. Having the 2-piece bolts, I held my breath while pulling the cam covers. The fates were pleased today; 23 perfect removals and 1 that started to turn the shoulder bolt, but then gave it up without stripping anything.

Tonight, lottery tickets!

Was under the car and made the mistake of looking upward into the front cavity with the headlight / foglight wires.

Discovered about 3.5 pounds of dry, crispy electrical tape, most of which without adhesive anymore (Ok....maybe 3.5 pounds is an exaggeration, but it's a lot).

Working on cleaning it up with some new waterproof connectors (need to figure out which ones to get), new splices, heatshrinking, etc.

Back on the 86.5 drained the coolant out,
I RnRd the AC lines, receiver drier, EX valve,
installed new schrader valves, one was leaking at the compressor manifold.
Added a Greg Brown hi pressure solder in line.
All of this took all day to do.
Then pulled a vacuum and waiting to see how well it holds.

Crawled under and Definitively identified the culprit of right rear wheel THWOPing noise. Inner boot had failed and had a piece of boot collar slapping suspension member when centrifugal force took over at about 20MPG.

Not looking forward to replacing the boots. Will be doing inner and outer just to be safe. Not a tough job based on doing the left side a year ago but it is a dang messy job. Parts ordered.

I was very happy that it wasn't the bearing because that put my trip to Frenzy at risk.
