really, it looks like it did when I pulled it appart. the moving part is a lever that has a long spring push on it .

the older drawing is exactly what my cover has bolted to it, and , it has that lever in that same position as shown. Im not that worried about it, but i would think it would be the same.

the transmission says on the stamping, 12/13, so i guess it might be a 2.2 or a 2.64. (or is that just the casing?)

Ill be around via cell so we can connect over the next few days.

PS do I need to get a 3rd bearing from somewhere. do we need pvc piping to punch it out wth the use of the truck bumper and a cement wall??

This weekend should work. Probably Sunday as I'm most likley going to be helping the guy who bought my supercharger do a bit of tuning on Saturday - maybe not. So Saturday or Sunday depending.

Mark, both drawings are of the same part, just done differently. One shows a negative image of the lockout piece, the other doesn't. Look again.

Your transmission top cover looks exactly right for an S4 (my 89 is the same - I have pictures of it somewhere).

I was looking at it again, and I didnt see what you are talking about. mine has that little "hook" that is hanging down that is springy loaded.

of course, i have that lever that is spung to the outside of the gear box.

Thanks for the verifcation though . it sure feels good and looks new inside!
I guess Ill spray down the thing as suggested to clean it up, since we are going to be wrapping our arms around it for a while!

Think Anderson has one that he can shoot up?

You think we can do the torque tube too? sounds like you have done this pvc pipe extraction and replacement before.

I'm pretty sure Mark would have it. I TRIED to do the PVC extraction on my tube but could not budge the carriers. In contrast, I've seen carriers fall out of other tubes. I'm sure we can get yours out. I need to find the bearings.

I got the bearing on the way. Mark A has it in his pocket, and he will deliver tomorrow!

By the way, it is a 2.2. just put it in 5th gear and got 1 revolution with the rear drive links, with 2.25 rotations of the main input shaft.

news flash.

Just did some more testing before we pull the transmission. guess what? It runs in 5th gear no problem. no noise, anything. (cept the torque tube noise) all other gears grind with no drive at all, like a ******! (including Reverse) so 5th gear is ok and the rest of the gear box is toast? I ran down the street in 5th gear, under load, its ok. Hmmmm!

waiting for Bill and we are going to yank this bucket of gears.

In what gear was the transmission when it failed?

What may have broken are the layshaft gears .....one on 5 th gear the other on the countershaft so no sale on your 5 th. The gear teeth on 5 th are for ALL gears but 5 th....that is direct on the pinion shaft with no gear ratio but 1 to 1 .

That means you didn't break the input gear, so your torque tube splines should be OK. But, like James said- something on the layshaft broke, probably the first transfer gear that the input meshes with...

Which makes 5th also useless as those two are paired together.
