Did you call Mark Anderson yet? He must have a way to replace broken input shafts by now.

redline. hey, 10years of racing and 15 years of who knows wear and tear. I would say, it was its time. and it was perfect, right up to the last shift.

the problem might be any damage after the broken pieces ran thorugh the gear box. I dont know. Ill have to pull it and let you know how bad it is.

I might have to take you up on this.. 2.64 is not that bad for my uses. remember, its only good, or better said, optimal, for laguna , sears thunderhill with power in the 300 to 400rwhp range. this might not be true at other tracks, so thats the way it is.

GT gearing would be better with 100 more hp.

Usually damage is on outside and only input shaft and its counterpart layshaft gear needs to be changed. They have to be changed at same time and come as single package which has one part number. It used to be $1K part but I haven't look into current pricing and availability.

You'd also be able to see a broken input shaft by taking out the rubber plug where the trans hooks up to the TT.
You really should call Mark A sometime within the first 10 pages of this thread.

Ive called Mark A, (a while ago) he has no S4 transmissions, but will be looking for me.

its not the typical break to the outside where you can see it through the plug, it feels like it might be on the inside of the bearing housing, or maybe an entire gear sheared. but the way it went, it was like the shaft just broke clean.(some grinding noise, but similar to when I broke the shaft on my '84 transmissino on the dyno. and it feels the same when you try to roll the car a little.

I have a feeling that it might be a clean break on the inside of the oil seal in transmission. Ill drain the oil to see if anything can flow out.

Im temped to cut that hole in the tunnel to pull the top cover off first, but I might just try and attack the transmission and get it out of there. as it has to come out either way.

Mk

I think anderson has seen the price for this part as being $1500. It might be worth it if that is the only thing that sheered and no other parts went and got chewed up in the transmission.

I know that Post Brother's auto salvage, Catskill, NY has(d) an S4 manual trans from a fire-car with less than 50k miles. I considered buying it when i got my TT. They are on the web, good guys to work with.

Best of Luck.

with the limited lifespan and availability of 928 5 speeds.....it makes me glad to run the slushbox... :>)

super reliable, with faster shifts...I gain on the 5 speeds every time they shift...and better weight dist too!!!

why does does my garage smell like gear oil? there are no leaks, but that rubber plug has been removed to see if the torque tube shaft broke or the end of 5th gear.

Find me a rebuilt G28/10 through G28/12 with LSD and I will give up my G28/13 with LSD. It took me 3+ years to fined this and I am not really wanting to give it up; however, if you get the 5-speed with the 2.64 gear with LSD preferred, I would gladly trade!

I have Randy Faunce's Devek rebuilt 2.20 with LSD I'd sell for $2700. The only reason I'm selling is to fund the proper GT transmission for my car.

Certain smells permeate when only slightly uncovered. Gear oil is one of them.
