There has to be a hole somewhere in the transmission or the oil must have leaked out for you to be able to smell it. Gear oil has a very strong smell, it doesn't take much to stink up a garage.

sure, the cover (plug) is off the rear, but there was a little oil back there. but very discolored, probably from year of not being touched and some pretty high temps. probably just seepage. with the plug out, this slight leakage, must be the sourse of the smell. or , durign the failure, something happened in the trannie for it to burn up .

I have a suspision that the gear didnt loose teeth, the shaft broke inside. but I wont know until I get it out. either way, its coming out, so that is the next step.

When you get the box from Europe here, bring it by the house and I will put the car up in the air and remove my G28/13 w/ LSD. Does Cherboreator's box have a LSD also?

How far off are the dimensions on the early 5 speeds from the S4's? Any chance of making an earlier box work?

At any rate, all speculation is just that until the part is on the bench in pieces. You may end up better off with a fresh part instead of a box.

Mark

I dont know why no one has sugested this idea yet.
I think you should be the first to convert a 5 speed to an Automatic! There’s plenty of them out there and they seem to be very well built.

you dont want to race the early boxes, by choice anyway. the S4 box is a dream to drive, but both work. the S4 is much stronger due to bigger stronger gears and much better and durable synchros.

Your right! i have to get it off the car and opened up. im hoping its just a broken 5th gear shaft, not gears without teeth!

Guess that depends on how bad you want to race...

HOw about selling the busted 5-speed to the guy who's restoring the old Holbert car which would be worth more with matching #'s, put that $ toward working replacement? Just a thought.

Mark, why not put in that special 928 6-spd transmission you picked up in Mexico a while back?

I sold it back to Herr Kunz for his V10 928 engine expansion racer project.
