Before you pull the tranny out of your car you might want to check the break away torque on the LSD just so you know where your at. Are you considering rebuilding your diff as well? Probabally wouldn't hurt to refresh it. Should be good for another 10 yrs if you rebuild both the tranny and diff now

Its always been really really weak. could be a blessing in some areas, but a curse in others. I know i have no inside wheel spiin or handling issues, due to it being kind of weak. most folks get way way too much lock and this is not good in a lot of turns. too little and you lift and spin the inside wheel. turn 5 exit, at t-hill, or turn 2 at sears.

I think i mesured something like about 15ftlbs of breakaway on the diff.
I think its supposed to be more like 20.

Mongo
The 2.64 was the 89 5 speed non GT USA transmission and also the Euro S4 5 speed (non-psd or GT)

I liked the ratios in the Widow......

2.63 uses the same gear ratios as the GTS and OB transmissions, but has the 2.63 vs the 2.75/2 ring and pinion. looks like a good match for many of the tracks around here. 2.75, just has too many straights and turns where that doesnt make sense, unless you have BIG power. (at least 20% more than I have now)

Nope, once you go borg warner, you dont go back. has to be at least an 85 trannie or newer!

Im all set. now, the disassembly starts.

GregB has mentioned before that the early trans are actually good for racing, as they are easily rebuild able and cheaper in that regard. There are pros and cons to each.

thats right, i do remember him saying that. as long as the syncros are good, its not that bad to race with. a little knotchy, but ok. Ive race them a few times, and a while ago, my 84 5 liter had one as well. huge improvement with the borg warner 85 version.

but, if you can get them to last for 10 years of hard core racing, just save $200 per year for a new trannie out of your racing budget and get a new one. (or have it rebuilt by greg brown. )

Yep! Transmission coming tomorrow. im picking it up from the shipper at noon.
Now, i need a torque tube too, after all of us figured out that the throwout bearing is ALWAYS spinnning, so if any thing stops making noise when you push in the clutch, its the torque tube.

Now, i have to see if I can re-bearing it myself or have someone help me do it at a machine shop or something.

then, ill have to throw a transmission torque tube replacement party. (Im sure Ill make Bill , Swordfish again for dinner and beer! )

I guess I start loosening some bolts and gettig the car real high in the air.

Mark I did my tranny/ torque tube R & R in 2 days. One day out the next day back in. That included a torque tube rebuild and Alot of cleaning under the car and on all the suspension parts. Two guys two days having a lift sure helps but it could be done in the drive with the car up on stands. Pretty simple job when you get into it. I pulled the clutch but I am not sure if thats necessary. No big deal either way I've pulled it so manny times I can do it in about 1/2 hour. Secret is to use the little shims to take the load off the clutch arm then its easy to get the arm off the ball stud at the top of the bell housing.

Order the bearings now so you have then when you get the tube out. I got mine from Roger but he does not have the insert that goes in them. So I had to machine them my self. I would track down some bearings with inserts now other wise you will be delayed waiting on parts.

A rebuilt exchange torque tube from Mark A might be a good option too but in reality a torque tube rebuild takes about an hour if you have all the tools and parts at hand.

Good luck hope to see you at T-Hill March 05 weekend.

Trans in my garage right now.

LSD looks good at exactly 14ftlbs.

Now, the real work begins!

Got to get a torque tube lined up or someone that can help rebuld while its all out.

Wow, i have some beers to buy for someone now! (probably dinner!)

So, in my typical style, i go taking things apart before the wapper is off, like a kid at christmas. anyway, Ive pulled the cover off transmissions before, but there are somethings that i have forgoten in there.
like, all that "stuff " on the cover that connects down below. there is a lever at the rear cover portion. looks like some kind of a can opener, with a spring? what does it do. looks like it touches the rear shift fork. also, there is a spring that touches and press into the lever hanging down from the cover, and it provides pressure on the main "slider bar" to keep the shifter in gear I imagine. is there a bare spring that centers itself on the nipple of the lever on the cover arm? it is installed from the side with two 10mm bolts. im wondering , in my haste, if I pulled the cover, the spring let go and dropped another piece in the transmission. I drained the oil and moved things around, and dont see anything. but you never know. though I would ask some transmission experts. any other tricks to replacing the cover?
otherwise, im excited to get this thing in the car!
