I have removed a manual transmission with dropping the rear suspension, removing a dropped centering spring, and reinstalling everything in 6 hours including cleanup time.

So you do have some time to save there.
We were planning on rebuilding the TT. Also, it's a toss-up as to whether it's easier either way.

that is a good point! so, more heat, more expansion, gears get further apart and torque leverages the edges of the gears, with more torque and then failure. sounds logical. something to consider now!

as far as the holbert transmission. is it the 5th gear and one below it that could only be damaged? or could there be lurking destruction below?

I have to go back to the drawings to see how it all works. I still dont understand how all the gears interact. however, it was pretty funny that the car could still drive in 5h gear.

Part of the thinking behind cooling the trans is to reduce the expansion and dimensional changes of the alloy gear housing which lets the gears get further apart. The Rennlist stroker motor is also putting more torque into the box and more heat as the bearings are holding the gearsets in mesh.

As Bill said, we really thought that torque tube was toast. turns out, the noise was all resonatinig to the bell housing from the bum transmission. I guess its a matter of being able to slide in the main shaft, while up in the chassis, as well as slide on the shifter linkage. (that would be no issue). less exhaust stuff to remove , hmmmm. those torque tube front bolts were a pain though. i guess the only diff would be not have a easy way to lift and manuver the transmission with the two bum jacks we were working with.

however, if I do it again, i would probably just do the trans, just to see.

Yes much quicker to just do the trans let the suspension dangle from the forward pivots, wire the calipers up to the chassis.... only warning is carefully support the trans once it is slid onto the driveshaft until the torque tube bolts are tight or you might break one of the three tabs off 5 th gear. As far as other damage goes there were a bunch of busted off teeth floating around the box and may have passed through a gear set or two but not very likely. In the lower gears those busted up gears moved the powerflow down to the lay shaft (they are part of the formula for gear ratio) then each other gear set transfers it back up to the pinion shaft (the fifth gear is not engaged). For fifth it just locks the input to the pinion shaft and all you have is a straight line flow to the pinion gears. You probably could have driven it home or nearly there in 5 th .....best that you did not, remember those loose teeth
