Default Kibort Official 928 Racer Rebuild project Thread

I am planning to take the Holbert 928 chassis to Sharktoberfest at 928intl. in a few weeks. Right now, the plan is to swap the stroker drive train with the donor car that Mark Anderson has waiting for me in LA. I had a couple of choices with regards to the bare tub that Mark was offering. Buy parts as I needed them during the transplant, or buy the entire car, less the engine and clutch. I have decided to buy the car, and just replace things on the car that need to be upgraded to racing quality. Its an unknown chassis so it will be tough to determine what is worthy of being left on the car.

Today, I spent about 5 hours taking things off the holbert car, like the exhaust system , and front suspension. It looks like its almost ready for the engine and transmission to be dropped. The engine will not come upward, so it needs to go down. Ive never dropped an engine and drive train, so Ill leave it to the 928 team in LA, when I get down there. Im thinking once you get the steering rack down, there is room for the engine and headers to be dropped down, but with the frame rails pushed in a ways, i hope we are not going to have any issues there.

There is some header damage. I wonder if i can find some header tubing for the devek level II headers and do a fix at a local welding shop, so that we can put the engine in that same way in the donor car.

I also pulled the lower bell housing. It still looks good the only rubbing was due to the upper bell housing being badly cracked on the driver side. Im starting to think there might not be any issue with my toque tube or trans. But, we will know soon enough. Ill pull back the short shaft coupling on to the torque tube to see if it has any pre-load or is putting pressure on the engine crank due to to the accident. But, at a first clance, I might have dodged a bullet there.

So, I know Mark Andeson has pulled apart more 928s than any of us could count, but he has never organized a transplant. This is all going on Friday and Saturday at his place during Sharktoberfest. A lot of folks have talked about helping out, so who is in? Ill be there friday AM to start work and all through Saturday. I look forward to seeing everyone there, as I have yet to attend a Sharktober Fest event due to racing conflicts over the years. Shoud be a great party and I am also looking forward to putting faces to the names on the list here. Mostly, looking forward to taking the first major step in getting that engine back in a worthy 928 and doing some racing again.

Best,

mk

Well, you'll have to think of a new name for that new race car, as it is no longer a Holdert car.

Of course, you could always call it the Kibort car. But maybe we can come-up with something more exciting. I'll have to think about this a little...

Do we know the previous owners' names? Anybody famous there?

Considering the group effort that goes into Mark's racing, I say that should be a new thread. Gather all the ides and start a poll.

My vote for a new windshield banner, installed in reverse:

"HEY YOU STUPID HONDA, MOVE!!!!"

"MK3 racer"

Sounds good Nicole. Ill let you or the list come up with the name. It really cant be the "Phoenix" because the actual car is in Ed's hands now.

Friday morning Ill arrive.

Does anyone know where to get the header tubing? I need a couple of feet of our header tubing for the repairs to the straight tubes that have been crushed. (2 of them) fortunately, the headers were only slightly bent inward, but it all lines up with the lower bell housing, which I still got off the bell housing last night.

Does anyone know what kind of tubing is used on the headers? I wonder if they can be pulled apart, and then welded if there is any cracks.

Anyway, it would be good to have a few straight pipes there with us, so that if the engine goes in the next day, we can have the headers on the car without having to put them on with the engine in the car.

UPDATE:

Today I finally got the torque tube coupling free from the short shaft it was a ******!! i used a big screwdriver to lever it back and then some vice grips to lever back further. then, it started to pull the short shaft from the engine. It was WAY jammed up. probably not parallel. at halfway, it was stuck and not moving. Then, i used a long strong prybar and the vice grips, slowly but surely, it came free. It looked fairly parallel by visual inspection, but something is not right. anyway, it looks like the torque tube might be ok. it sure spun fine in neutral when I rotated it, but Ill let mark look at that. who knows if the short shaft is bent, or if all the issues is just from the bell housing being cracked with a 1-2mm crack on one entire side.

ready for the entire drive line to be dropped!

Tough to imagine turning a nice relaxing weekend of talking to 928 people, walking around, and looking at cars into another work weekend. I can stay at my shop and do that....and get paid! Nothing personal, just not something I'm looking forward to doing at Sharktoberfest.

Remember, all you were going to do was hold and drink a beverage, and point to where to use the axe!

I hope we can get most of the work done on friday, so saturday, there is not much left. so far, ive pulled off all my race stuff, and all that is left is the tub, and suspension components. the exhaust is gone and torque tube is disconnected from the short shaft.

Ive agreed to purchase what is left of mark Andersons rolling chassis, so that will be the next race car plaform. What we are doing now,is just transfering my drive train to the donor chassis.

Mark is going to pull the drive train off the donor car, and take the engine which is not part of our deal but leave everything else. (almost everything )

I just put two and zero together and realized I'm going to be in LA for meetings on the 19/20th. As long as I can get the plane ticket early I would love to be there. Sounds like fun!

Mark,

Try Burns stainless, they can get you any size and bend of tubing you need. I think they are also in Costa Mesa....

Sorry #19 was smashed, just noticed today, as I've been off here for centuries..
