Default Lack of Analog

Just had a 2024 Cayenne loaner today with the new all digital display.

The lack of analog tac really takes away from the overall experience. Why Porsche is taking this away from the 911 is beyond me.

While I don’t hate all-digital displays (…I really like BMW’s layout), I’m not really a fan of the Porsche’s digital experience. I think it comes across a bit cheaper and less premium feeling than the analog/dual screen layout in the .1. I feel the same way about the start/stop button and surrounding trim. The turn-key of the .1 feels more premium.

Could always mount a gigantic Autometer tach with shift light.

Because everyone bitched to no end that the steering wheel blocked the gauges on the 992.1. Now it is completely configurable.

Sigh! The good ol’ days. A-pillar goodness, wire loom and that blinding shift light.

What's so good about analog?

Serious question.

Do people actually know, or are people just following an Internet meme like .... lemmings.

I don't think anyone is arguing an analog tach is "so good" from a technical standpoint, but rather an aesthetic preference.

+ 1 on an aesthetic preference, no, make that a VERY STRONG preference.

When you see the analog tach moving you are seeing a real thing moving. With digital it's a fake representation of something that used to be real.

The 'real thing moving' you're referring to uses an electronic pickup which transmits a signal to the dash, which in turn converts that into a physical needle going around a printed image. If you really want a true analog tach then you need to go back to the old style driven gear, rotating cable, etc.

Not saying the 992.1 instrument isn't nice to use, just putting some perspective on this.

Why can't they reconfigure the 992.1 screens on either side? Could a tuner do it? I realize this software is not running in the ECU, but does anyone know if it's hack-able?

This is a serious question? It's obviously a subjective, aesthetic preference. It's not a matter of knowing or not.

I think because Porsche is one of the car companies that partnered with Apple for the new Car Play that is coming out. With the new Car Play you can customize the dash any way you want and the analog tach would hinder that. I prefer all analogue but hey I guess thats all going away. To note, however, VW is bringing back buttons and dials for radio/AC etc because too many people complained the all touchscreen controls. I also find it a pain to go swiping back and forth to change a simple setting while driving.

I'm ok with just digital...if it wasn't redundant and mimicking analog, lol....why does everything digital mimic analog dials, that's drives me crazy personally....come up with something new then for gosh sake....

There is no way taking away the analog tach improves the look of the 911. People can argue all they want about why, and eventually everyone will embrace it, because thats what we do. We jump on the bandwagon.

But IMO, having that one powerful piece of analog equipment - staring at you all the time, even when the power was off - is an incredible example of legacy mixed with modern.
