The day ended without a big noise except that coming from the White Car as Marc was doing some tuning in the dyno room. Things went a bit slower than I had hoped primarily because we started a couple of hours later than originally planned, socialized a lot, and I was surprised by all the junk under the intake manifold that had to be removed. This was the first time under the S4 manifold for me, and I have never seen a manifold like that before. What a contraption! Well, it's gone now and replaced by Andy's work of art.
Oh, and I have to admit the biggest reason things went so slow is that I completely forgot to That's right. I printed it out and put it in a binder, but I spent all Friday evening cleaning my car so it wouldn't look like a turd next to Seth's. So, I have to apologize to Andy for my lack of preparation and for standing there half the time going, "What do I do now?"
Andy has built a great kit with a lot of elegant solutions that you can't appreciate until you install it. Very well thought out and crafted. I have a lot of admiration for his design. I could never have conceived it on my own.
So, my car is about 80% done, and we should wrap it up in the morning. My previously unmolested automatic S4 pulled 262.5 on Tom Cloutier's Dynapac beforehand. Tomorrow we will see the result of 5 lbs boost on that number.
My sincerest thanks to Andy for coming out to do this. It was fun to see him flitting from car to car during the day dispensing wisdom and turning wrenches. He truly knows what he is doing. Also, major thanks to Marc, Susan and the whole Devek crew for hosting the event, providing food and drink, supplying tools and shop supplies as well as use of the lifts. LOTS of the local 928 crowd turned out and pitched in, with a special guest appearance from Anders all the way from Sweden. For once Dan Bise wasn't the long distance guest at an event in NorCal, although it was good to see him again.
So, stay tuned for the results tomorrow!

I didn't stay long on account of the long drive I had ahead of me (blasted back to SD in 6 1/2 hours).
Great to see Anders, Marc, Bill and the rest (Anders - your Porsche Club Sverige keychain gift is now dangling off the GTS key - thanks, pal!) Thanks again to Seth for doing the initial check flight on the GTS earlier this month - enjoy the new SC, dude!
Also, thanks to Susan for taking care of me through the final checkout and minor fixes on the GTS while I stood by as an expectant father in the maternity ward!

It's really nice being here and meeting old and new friends! Glad that you liked the key chain Randy!
Geoff, I will be around until April 5 if you feel like doing something my schedule is open.
I was pretty much a zombie after my 28 hour flight (everything went wrong) if I seemed a bit off yesterday.

Andy:
Acceleration is staggering even though it's "only" 334/345, and that's with 75 lbs of useless parts and my tools in the back. Cruising, it, of course, drives like it did before - you would not know there had been anything at all done to it. Put the hammer down, and it never drove like it does now, but then it settles right back down when you back off. Car ran great all the way home.
Thanks to you and Mike for all your expertise and assistance. The 4-at-a-time SC party was a big challenge and you and Mike kept at it. Now, GET SOME SLEEP. The odd uneven and high idle persists. I'm sure we'll figure that out shortly. Otherwise, it's "YEAH, BABY!"

All meals were served in the valley of my engine, which honestly, was cleaner than even I could have hoped for.
My install is still pending. 1st, I did not RTFM. 2nd, there was a lot going on and a lot socializing. 3rd, my car did not behave. I am constantly amazed at how different these cars are. Marc Thomas and I were discussing that there are just factory tolerances in the placement of things that makes stuff a challenge. Bottom line, Andy had to modify my manifold to seat properly. He could not do this and get Jim H off to Portland and talk to prospective customers and eat and sleep and--well you get it. I will update when we are further along. I will be at Devek today.

Seth,
Sounds like a long but fun weekend. Just out of curiosity, what was "different" on your engine compared to any other 928 5.0 block? Be safe when it is finished-be pointed straight the first time you "get on it".

Jim: there are two sets of bolts near the grounding points on the back where there are brackets (one allen bolt, one regular) and when you loosen them, coolant comes out, they are right next to the further rear cylinder on both sides (best I can describe it!). On my car, both of them were a bit "forward" of where they were on Bill's car--a couple of MM. Cosequently, my manifold did not seat properly. Same model (gt vs s4), 1 year apart, and should have been totally the same. They were not.
This also showed in the access to my spark plugs. Jim H's 90 gt had a spark plug "tunnell" that was at least 1-2mm wider than mine. Both gt's, 1 year apart. It just appears that Porsche's idea of mass production has very high tolerances within each unit (i.e. they are built VERY well, great blocks etc.) my has low tolerances from unit to unit (i.e. they vary a lot from car to car). To this end, I've yet to drive 2 928s that felt quite the same--though this is due of course, in great part, to car care.
