I suggest putting a wanted ad on CL. Once I got an amazing 88 Supra Turbo that way.

OD lol

Could I perhaps do both? The reason I'd also love an early car, an '83 for example, is because it has manual steering, but if I remember right it is possible to de-power a power steering rack.

Is it possible to find '87-89 cars for $2k?

Karl, you are letting your mom do your decision making. I know this is a technical forum, and I can only speak for myself here, but doing your own footwork and networking is very rewarding when you get the right car. I'm sure I've said this earlier in the thread, but I got my car all the way across the country. Your mother clearly wants to help and has no ill intentions, but don't be afraid to look past the end of your own nose for a good deal.

That black 85 you posted is worth checking out in person. You have a new clutch, new seals and gaskets throughout, Fuchs, and probably fewer headaches down the road because a lot of "while you're in there" stuff has probably been done. Brake lines are easy. Stay away from that "need gone ASAP" ad, that seller probably has not done the car any favors maintenance wise and you would be inheriting a potential basket case.

But an improvement over before and previous moments is it not?

Yes, but this needs to be all you, tell your parents politely you dont need her help, or that you dont want it if she persists.

That would allow me to work faster if I did so. This could also be a bonding moment for us as well because this is the first time she's ever taken an interest in cars like this.

I'd love for her to be apart of the journey, but only on the sidelines, not to try to lead the way or take control of the situation if you get my meaning.

That black '85, even though I'm not a fan of cleaning black cars is looking to be the best of the three and I'll see if I've got time to check it out this month. I'm working two jobs and doing summer classes now so time is more scarce than it's ever been for me. Gotta make every second count!

Actually I think I'll check out the red 85.5 as it is
the closest, newest, and has the lowest mileage at 90k miles.

Saw this beauty at work today!

Also, let me ask you guys something. I'm ready to try to do some car work on my own and wrench when the time comes, but What I haven't bee considering yet is exactly how much do you guys budget out for maintenance and repairs? I know it's definitely not cheap, but how much do you all usually spend per year?

Karl, that question you just asked could unleash a ****storm.

And there is no good answer. It depends on the needs of the car, the parts you choose, how thorough you are, etc. Id say $2000 would get you pretty far if you did all your own work.

Too much...oh god...way too much. WHY DID YOU ASK!?

On a serious note, most of the "expensive" things I have bought for my car were a want not really a need. It can be addicting.

Update!!

That red 85.5 was a no show. The car wasn't where it was reported to be, and calls and emails went unanswered. Crossing it off the list as there are plenty more cars out there.
