Default Karl_W944 and the Search for the Perfect 944 :Burnout:

Hi!

I'm Karl and if you don't know who I am, look at what apparently has become one of the most epic, longest threads in the shortest amount of time!(23 pages in 4 days!! )

Now I want you to read it all!
https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...st-member.html

Nah Just kidding haha!
This is what I think should be a referred as a "sub sub-thread separate of another thread that was started by the OP"! What I'll be doing here is documenting my search, researching and eventual purchase and first drive of my very own 944! And maybe, this story can be used for future 944 owners that will be in my situation not long from now. And maybe, just maybe, it'll prevent the second coming of AMAF the Great

For all of you who subscribed and followed my first thread, if your interested in continuing with me, stay tuned and keep up!

Note: I'll only be making posts here with info as it comes so please don't use this as a chat forum for anything other than the subject matter of this thread.(No, V8s allowed on this one because I can't afford one... that could come later..)

Now that all being said, lets begin!

the best one was posted and then removed by the driver for legal reasons.

it was a guy from this same RL forum with a Goodwrench V8 going 0-150-0 on a country lane in about 16 seconds.

and God bless him.

here's a rather interesting car doing some burn outs.

well, the cars are far better suited for track day, road courses and twisties on your nearby country road

rather than burnouts or drag racing.

you asked.

Default Chapter 1.0 The Beginnings of a Proper Search

Grabbing my "944 Notebook" and a cup of cocoa, I was on my way to the local P-Car shop!

1:00 and I'm at Gilson Motorsports in Troy MI. Taking a look at the clean 928 outside I preceded inside to see the lovely array of cars being worked on at the time. Classic 911s and a turbo, 356s, 928s and 944s and even a Boxster! After consulting one of the techs there this is what I picked up on.

When choosing your car, you must consider the year; be it one of the following:

Early-type: '83-85
Late-type: '85.5-88, '89
Turbo: '86-89
S: '87-88
Turbo S: '88-89
S2: '89-91

Each model is different and you must consider this before you jump in. Here are links to certain aspects of the Early vs. Late types and such that have helped me.

If there is anything important that I learned today, it's to consider all possible locations to find a 944. By that I mean looking in your area, state is fine, but do consider looking at other states; notably, there are plenty of cars in the dry states if you, like me, are from the snow and rainy states(northeastern states to be exact).

California(to which I'm heading out to in the spring) has a lot of cars to choose from. Not only this, but they are also much cheaper and you won't have to worry much about rust because it doesn't really snow at all on the west side(excluding Washington)!

What is your budget for the car, your budget for catch-up maintenance, and the size of your war chest for "unexpected" repairs?

For example it might be something like $3K for the car, $1500 for catch-up and $1500 emergency savings. Can you do a clutch yourself? If not, add a biggish pile of money to the war chest.

Budget is now at $4k! much higher than I originally started with. Cali Cars are pretty nicely priced if you find the right ones.

Default Chapter 1.0 The Beginnings of a Proper Search cont.

Another thing when planning a trip like mine to find your car, Plan ahead.

Know not when you want to go, but when you can afford to go; that being said, I've had to move my trip to late July due to school reasons. However, as frustrating it'll be, knowing I have to wait almost half-a year before I can actually get one, this means I'll be able to save more money for the car and I'll still have time to take part in the Woodward Dream Cruise(A BIG DEAL when you're from Michigan!!)!

More to come as time goes on.

Jimmy-Jacking? But I thought it was a bad idea? That was kinda the idea everyone gave me from what I remember. To not do family business and go out and find my own

All it takes is cash and patience.

The "perfect" car is out there.

The rest is mental masturbation.

Karl,

I believe your previous thread is more than adequate.

Take all the information that people here were generous in offering to you and contemplate it for a few weeks.
