I have no records for the first 20 years of this car's life, so I decided to proactively replace the head gasket while replacing the leaking cam tower gasket.

Deep into the second year of ownership and I'm getting pretty quick at stripping everything off to get into the guts of the top end.

New vs old

Maybe the factory original?

Most of the gasket felt and looked swollen, and it was starting to fall apart around one ring.

I also unbolted the mid-pipe and waste-gate as I'm going cat-less with the Bursch 2.5" pipe and upgrading to Lindsey dual-port WG.

Took a peak inside the old pipe and was surprised by a hollowed-out cat. I don't know if I'm looking at something intentional or if the original material just burned-up / blew-out.

Let me know if any part of this pipe looks factory.

The Bursch pipe weights at least half as much, so I'm going to stick with the original plan.

Put it all back together and drove it for first time since October. 100 miles in pouring rain... Good times.

Pulled out the pop-up headlight assembly. A little sad to see it go, but I'm hanging on to it in case I ever change my mind and want the pop-ups back. Just waiting on my Hella projector modules to arrive so I can finish up the project.

I'll post pictures and net weight reduction when it's all wrapped up.

Yeah, nothing fancy, really. Same style of headlight bucket as a standard GTR-style setup, but with a projector inside instead of a 5x7 sealed beam. It costs more but I figure the extra light output will be worth it. I'm also considering adding some LED daytime running lights but I think that might end up looking kinda tacky.

I'll take photos of the process and post them up when I'm done.

After hours of frustration and mangled hands, I was FINALLY able to pull the pick-up sensor bracket off the engine. Tried many approaches, but using long socket extensions and a universal joint allowed me to loosen the bolts from under the car.

I really hate that location.

So I'm installing the updated sensor bracket (and sleeve) to hopefully solve the harsh starter kick-back and non-starts.

If you're wondering which one you have, you can identify them installed in the car - the newer bracket has an extra 'B'.

Ugh, found a hole in the exhaust header bellows.

I can't imagine this can be fixed - what are my options here?
