Got underneath for the first time, no rust, reattached the radiator mounts to the front lower valence. Did not get the 02 sensor off, which was priority one, it was rusted on pretty solid, did not want to strip it. Will keep soaking with penetrating oil and maybe look for a specialty socket or wrench.

T-belt was visible and looked bad, visibly cracked. Ordered a Gates belt and tensioner, $23 shipped from Amazon, heck of a deal. The replacement of the belt looks relatively easy compared to other cars. I am afraid those will be famous last words.

I did some work on the factory headlight covers. I could just have them welded to the header panel and forget the big plexiglass cover. They are just duct taped in place now.

I took the car to a dyno day yesterday. 197 WHP. Sadly, it was one of the lowest HP cars that showed up. That will change when I get the engine rebuilt and the turbo installed.

What car is it squinting at?
Will it be able to pass enough light trough to do a good job and be legal?

Belt AND tensioner for $23? That's an amazing deal. That is a good deal for just the belt.

You may want to do a little research on belt replacement on these cars. It is not that simple. Were it not for the balance shaft belt - it would be a lot simpler. The B/S belt is a little fiddly and there are a lot of little things that need to be just right. Proper tension on both belts is critical.

Also - the waterpump can cause problems. If it has not been replaced recently, this would be the right time to do that as well.

Good luck.

I'll be interested in seeing how well the lights work like that.
Thinking about something similar

Towed Doug's 951 across TX the other day with the 944 support vehicle. Next time I'll get a different geometry hitch so it isn't sitting on its *** so much.

It's not squinting, those are it's angry eyes.

It let's out plenty of light. It is brighter than my wife's new toyota.
I doubt(hope) anyone is going to look close enough to wonder about it being legal. Once I get it finished it will look "factory" to anyone who doesn't know these cars very well.

wonder if it'd be any better if the nose panel were trimmed out of the way and the corners blended...

I guess I didn't mention which car I had, plain old 924, I don't think I have a balance shaft (or the extra 40 or so hp that came with it ) , but I will definitely read up on the job both in the manual and on the net before I open her up.

That is why I am still looking into the big one piece plexiglass idea. I think that would be the best possible solution. I can make the openings any shape I want when I paint it.
