Don't!
There's a few lurkers here for sure.
Those who used to work on 914s (I've RHD converted a few, 914/6ed one, and 916ed another).

Curiously though, I never noticed the inner front fender construction is the same as a Karmann Ghia, and not something I've seen too often elsewhere.
Though, I am sure that filler panel and seal is used by others.

I gotta ask though, how can you work on a Porsche and still use 34 inch and 16/9rds and 5/7ths?
Wouldn't mm make it easier, less likely to make mistakes and fit with everything else on the car?

Enjoying the journey.
Now, back to the shadows...

I figured at least a handful of people are paying attention. Got to carry on then...

Nice car and plate.

I am used to mixing units and systems. Back in my oil industry days, we jumbled feet, meters, PSI, pascals, and whatever else was convenient or imposed by tradition.

I worked on the bumpers today, and like the rest of the car, I got good news and bad news.

The rear bumper looked pretty good, including the rubber top strip.

Here's how the PO blocked off the towing eye hole, with a thin metal patch brazed on the inside.

After cleaning up, here's the hole from the outside.

Yes, this was a chrome bumper. And before painting it black, the PO sanded the chrome. Otherwise the bumper is fairly straight.

The front bumper has more issues, especially at the right end. The right bracket was torn off and rewarded--badly. And apparently the fit was also off, so the dog bone got shaved in half.

The bumper end also got dented and crimped.

The outside shape looked roughly correct.

But some of wire brush action revealed a bit of bondo. That's about 1/2 inch.

After more chipping and grinding, the ugly truth emerged.

I know they're not OEM, but someone over at 914 world sells new stainless steel bumpers. Not sure of quality but may be worth it. I did have the front bumper on my '73 rechromed because I filled in the holes from the rubber ****. Bumpers on my '71 are original and luckily not in bad shape, but not concours.

Today I remembered to remove the torsion bars from the engine lid--and made sure it has no surprises.

I spent some discouraging time working on the front bumper today.

This is how much the end section is off (pushed back).

The inside view shows the severely crimped edge.

I tried using my press to unfold some of the damage, with partial success.

The profile got a little better, but still off (and in other measures, too).

After about an hour with hammers and dollies, the profiles are still not right--and not moving easily.

Better luck with the front bumper today. My focus is still getting the shape and profiles correct. Lots of levering and banging with the bumper braced in different positions.

The first success was getting the profile along the edge that the top cap edge sits on. When measured along a true horizontal, this should be a straight line. This looks good, except for the segment beyond the bend.

Then I worked to get the curve profile back to normal, compared to the left side with the template gauge. This is better, but still needs work.

So, a bit more work, and the profile is pretty close.

The face still looks lumpy, but that's for later.

I also checked one of my lists and remembered the rear bumper top center support bracket, that mounts to the center panel.

Here's the layout.

And the finished bracket. I will wait to weld this when the car is off the rotisserie.

If your transaxle needs refreshening I think I found the place- took it to California Motorsport in Lake Havasu City in western AZ today. Fantastic shop that does wonders with all different AC'ed trannies. It will be like new inside and out when finished!!
