After a 25 Year Break, 914 Ownership Again

Today was moving day. With the help of great friends Mike and Chuck, and my son Harry, we got the car loaded on the trailer in about 30 minutes. I was concerned about leaving the weight on the dolly wheels while driving, so we built a wood cradle that was supported by jack stands, which in turn were screwed down to prevent shifting.
About an hour later it was on the ground again at the paint shop.

I spent most of the day cleaning and re-organizing the garage, plus fabricating a steel column for our main deck shade structure. But the end goal was to get the 914 engine on the stand. Don't be jealous of the fabulous red heads. And intakes. And push rod tubes. And blower housing. And (not shown) air filter housing, exhaust, and trans.

I got to work today on the engine, first checking and labeling things, and then starting to remove everything. But first I wanted some space to lay things out, and so repurposed the plywood section that was the base for the trailer cradle into a table.
Getting closer to seeing the engine itself.
First round of parts to check and clean up.

I finished stripping the outside of the engine. Everything came off easy, except...one cheesehead screw. Given that this screws into the top of the case, I took some care. That turned into about 30 minutes of penetrating oil, finesse with a beefy screwdriver, heating with a torch, and finally lots of "gentle" taps with a hand impact tool. Eventually, it gave up.
With all the sheet metal off, I could see the tops of the cylinders. No mouse nest, but a fair amount of crud and dirt.
Next, we will see why lies waiting inside.

With a quick look, things look OK, but will need to wait to clean off the carbon and crud.
The cylinders even still show cross hatching and no signs of wear.
