Boy, that car must have lived an "interesting" life before you got it...

I stopped by the body shop today, and found them shuffling cars around. My 914 is wrapped up to keep off dust (and unlikely rain), while another car gets done in the paint booth. It should be in primer by tomorrow.

More work today on cleaning and inspecting the main harness. GoofOff makes it easy to remove the undercoat spray. It also removes the red paint overspray but only with LOTS of rubbing.

Of course, once cleaned, I found more breaks and cracks in the insulation.

While rooting around in the interior parts, I found the hand-written number inside the dash front. Since the number does not match the VIN, and the blue over-spray does not match the original Bahia Red, my guess is that this dash was swapped in at some point in time.

FYI. If your car needs any transaxle work, I can recommend California Motorsport in Lake Havasu city. Picked up the transaxle today for the 73. Looks like a work of art. They have a lot of their own billet pieces that improve on the factory pieces. They were working on a lot of different transaxles including some or the special factory Porsches in Germany running the tag Heuer left over F1 engines. Very impressive.

automotive archeologism.....
one day it will be considered a noble job when we are surrounded by washing machines on wheels

I got my replacement strut last night from 914 Werke, a perfect replacement for my original left side with the mangled internal threads. Next week, off to the powder coat shop.

I finished my survey of the main harness. Lots more "little" problems.

Some evidence of a short circuit and melting wires.

Hiding under the tape, some real quality PO work.

Altogether, about 30 spots to repair (so far)--look for the blue tape.

Feast your eyes on this air filter housing!

The inside, complete with moldy air filter. Another couple of parts for powder coating.

probably had to hit the local Home Depot too- you’d run out before the second coat otherwise

I keep stuff like this in mind, when I think of "creative" ideas for modifications.

Another slight detour today, still trying to gather all the parts for powder coating.

I dug into the box of engine auxiliary parts, and pulled out the intake plenum complete with throttle body.

After stripping all the parts from the plenum, let's take a peek inside: oily sludge.
