Just got some stuff from Competition Engineering. Good shop. Ask for Dan, the owner. Just got a "new" pressure tested oil cooler and another friend got a "new" balanced fan for one of his 356's. Looks and feels like an old school VW/Porsche shop. Had a really nice outlaw 356 in the shop he was working on, and a decent looking 914 outside waiting to go in...

(PM me for more info if you want)

The engine builder Aase Motors in Fullerton, Ca sourced these for us ... O.E. Mahle, more than likely purchased from SSF Parts or IMC warehouse.

More inspection today.

The left head has a pulled exhaust stud.

The type 1 oil pump had contact with something, but not with the cam I removed (the bolt heads are pristine).

Some cast-in ID on the cam. Looks like a CWC cam. The lift is about .305 for exhaust and .318 for intake, so far from stock (and probably not suitable for stock FI).

I stopped by the body shop today. They finished paint stripping yesterday, and got to about 95% bare metal. Good news one: no surprises hidden under the paint. Good news two: the shop guys are reasonably impressed with my body work.

I expect assembly might take longer than taking things apart. Except maybe the days I spend extracting the PO carpet and glued-in home carpet padding.

That looks great, there is nothing i love more in the pricess tahn to see the bare metal shell, congrats , i am amazed by your tenacity and your fabrication skills , most shops would require more than half a year to get there

Thanks. I have been happy to have a project to keep me busy. And I can only afford my own labor!

I got my parts washer going again today with new solvent, and did a first clean up of the engine case. Looks like the previous build used black silicone on everything (except red silicone on the push rod tubes).

While taking a break from cleaning parts, I decided to make a 914 bracket for my engine stand. This will let me more securely hang the engine from one side during reassembly. This should make a good TIG welding project for my son next week.

Cars and coffee this AM in north Scottsdale. A friend in our coffee group has a extensive collection including this real 6 with extensive european race history. I got a short ride in this a couple months ago. It is a beast!
