Working on these cars requires learning a lot of little tricks. I like WB's tip on using a compression test. If you turn the motor over by hand to TDC mark on the pulley, and the cylinder does not hold compression, then the cam timing is off. I doubt this will be the case because cam timing does not change once it is set.

More than likely the lopey idle is just the car idle being a little bit slow, as you already noted. That is why is smooths out when you give er some gas.

Are we sure the loopie idle isn't just a sticky ICV? I think I remember a "cleaning" or "service" but do we know it's really working up to the level it needs to. I cleaned mine and thought I was good 'til I replaced it and wow what a change!!!!

Remember Rusnak he did have the cam retimed during the work . i for one do in fact believe cam timing can cause "off idle" . Not saying it is the case but it is possible to have the cams off so you have more power but have idle suffer. I would have thought they would heve retimed both cams but ya never know ... just bemusing.

That is the question....were the cams ever re-timed prior? If they were at one edge of the range, and now the one were at the other edge, what difference would/could this make in idle, powerband, etc?

I'm only guessing, but wouldn't the engine make a lot less power as if 6 valves were out of adjustment? I would certainly think they'd have checked the timing of at least those six, if not all 12.

I'm quite sure all was re-timed....

Engine had a rebuild at a little under 100Kmiles, so surely it was timed back then (now, she's at ~132Kmiles).

It's still consistent with it's lumpiness,..but runs like a raped ape. Looks like rain this weekend, so I've been driving her everyday since I picked her up. May get her back in (per shop's request) at the 500 mile point next week or the week thereafter.

Was somewhat warmer today (weather),..so she finally saw a good +180 degrees on the temp gauge...even took her out at lunch for a good 45 minute run on the interstate.

Time will tell,...sheeit will smell,..and water will seek its own level.................

Best to all,

Doyle

Was going thru the invoice and wanted to itemize for you guys (best I can, that is) what this visit encompassed. Each Labor Entry accompanies a subsequent labor cost but this won't be posted here, in respect for my P-wrench/shop...::::::::::::::::

LABOR STUFF

Test drive/analysis
#1 spark plug time at the "in situ'" removal attempt. It, ultimately, broke off (as you all know).
Remove/replace motor-tranny. Remove exhaust system (both muffler and Cat),..check oil leaks, ..Remove Left Timing box (what's this guys?),..repair #1 cross-threaded plug with drill-out and timecert install...clean out of cylinder #1. Install/gap new plug. (previously changed out plugs[5 of them] 2 weekes previous to visit). Replace motor mounts and all related hardware. PVC hose, repair left inner CV boot clamp (replaced).

Repair broken thermostat mounting stud and install new Viton O-Ring. Replace all oil cooler O-rings

Then lucky for you it was that plug .. or lucky for them.. they also fixed an oil leak in there too I guess .. the cam sproket has to come off and there fore that is the reason for your retimed cams .. I am hoping to do that project if I ever grow a pair .....

The adjustable cam sprockets look very interesting to me. I wonder if you can get away with just one, on one side only?
