Received my Classic Retrofit CDI+. I was able to purchase this new and unopened from another member that changed his mind and stayed with the stock CDI. I saved a few bucks and helped another member out
I also spent some time reading Wayne’s book covering engine rebuilding. This book is awesome. Even as a novice, I am feeling pretty confident as I get closer to putting my motor back together.
Quick update. I received my SC/RS style air box cover from John at ST-Classic. Just needs to be painted (John leaves his parts raw/unpainted). It will look cool when the air cleaner is in there - you will look right into it. It has a small metal screen in place of the stock snorkel. Kinda cool.
Also sent my '72 oil filter console to Elephant Racing to be machined to accept their thermostat and second oil line. I ordered their finned oil lines for my front oil cooler setup.
the books are good. Waynes, and the bruce book, read them both cover to cover.
I am not building the engine I'm having done now, but do want to give a go rebuilding the engine in the car now. Even if I just sell it :-) Or, find a car to put it in! lol
You could do a PVD/Cerakote plating too which is thin and very durable.
^more good ideas for finish. Yes, those books are good. I have owned Bruce's book since I bought my SC many years ago.

Ordered my S sport seats from Stefan and was confirmed a spot with Shane East for paint - car should be headed there in a couple weeks. Really happy about this since he has a long wait.
Received my aluminum rear bumper guards from Karmann Konnection. They only weigh1.4 lbs combined, which is less than half the weight of the steel ones. Nice little weight savings off the furthest rear point of the car. I will not add back the rubber deco strips, but am thinking about a black decal of some sort to keep the weight savings down.

...are you planning on installing any Dynamat like panel dampers or closed foam cell for noise reduction? Or are you going straight lightweight?

I honestly don't know yet. I had started researching this and saw there were a bunch of opinions. There will be only lightweight carpet in the back. My biggest concern is heat. So my goal is to balance some level of sound deadening and heat reduction with weight. Maybe others will chime in here with what they have done to balance these 3 things. I figured I could experiment a bit once the car was running to see what sound levels were.
I have my roller shell back after an 8yr. long(!!!) bare metal restoration on a ZERO rust 72!! Don't ask...I am going over the electrical now to get things sorted before engine/transmission goes in.
I am seriously considering some dynamat pieces for mass dampening (floor/back seat area/roof/inside doors/followed with closed cell noise insulation foam under the carpet) I was just looking at options for engine compartment pad. This is the time to do it...
Oh man and I thought my 2 year project was tough. I also thought I was buying a car with little rust. How quickly I found out this was wrong! I removed a bunch of rust before sending it to my sheet metal guy and he has only managed to find more. I now understand when people say all of these old cars have rust. I would love to see more about your build since it is a '72 as well.
I agree with the engine sound pad. Those things are pretty light (the new replacement from Porsche is lightweight foam) and make a noticeable difference (I replaced one on my other 911), so I will do that for sure. I will have to figure out the rest of the rear. The stock stuff I removed weighed a ton!
