Nice...I still think the 981 flat 6 sounds better.

I'm sure with an after market exhaust, the 4.0 will still sound great but IMO, the 981 with the right exhaust sounds pretty wicked. Looking forward to hearing a 4.0 in person. Only so much you can tell with OEM exhaust in an online video.

This 4.0 is a a step in the right direction away from the T4 but IMO no where near enough additional thrills to jump from the 981.

If you're on the market for a new Cayman or Boxster, the GTS is the easy choice though.

I loved my 981 Spyder, but the roof was somewhat annoying , so with this problem solved

Woohoo! Over in the 718 GT4/Spyder thread area, the early results seem to indicate that the inert GPFs (like the ones we will get in the USA) allow the exhaust to sound way better than the active ones (which are in cars sold in the EU). Perhaps the 718 GTS 4.0 will be a truly epic road car?

How much heavier is the Boxster gts 4.0 compared to the 981 spyder?

Henry on Carfection said it was lighter than the spyder by something like 15kg!

Due to smaller brakes and lack of rear wing.

On the outside, yes it does. But there's a mechanical precision to the 4.0 that sounds a bit more like the GT3 engine at times. It's still nowhere near as dramatic but it sounds like a more serious engine sometimes. If you're sitting in the car the sound is great. It just doesn't let you show off and make noise to pedestrians anymore.

Which is 100 percent due to noise regulations by the way. They could've made it louder even with the GPF but they put it as close to the curve of what was allowed sound wise as they could. It's not a simple test anymore, there are various speeds and engine load points now that have closed the "press the loud button" for noise loophole in stock cars.

Edit: just one of my laps (had never driven the track before so was a bit tricky)

This car is what should cause GT4 981 prices to drop (I speak as an owner) - it looks excellent, great colours, you can spec it to look like a Spyder or GT4.

Catchpole essentially says it is very nearly either car/ AutoExpress the same and they are all driving on narrower PZeros.

Still love my 981 GT4 though !

fascinating that Catchpoole said that the engine is exactly the same as the GT4/718 Spyder, including the exhaust, it’s just software. But he did not mention the intake and the side vents seem different. I suppose that is the way forward as, save the exhaust/intake, the 991.2 GT3 and GT3RS have the same engine.

I have been playing with the UK configurator (I am a configurator addict) and the biggest disappointment is that Porsche still won’t let you option LWB in anything other than a base/some alcantara or leather/alcantara interior. Of course the UK gets the folding buckets and you can have them in the nice natural leathers. Save the LWB issue, I think python/brown roof/silver wheels/espresso would be a beautiful spec.

It’s also nice that they let you spec the crests in the headrests as I always found the stitched model names to be tacky. Of course, again, not available on LWB ... don’t want GT3 touring owners getting mad I guess.

Thanks so much! And from what they're saying about how the "inert" GPFs sound on the 718 GT4s, this car will sound even better with them than it does with the active GPFs on the cars you drove.

I wonder if there's a SoundAktor factor in this?

What they said at the presentation is "later this year" it'll become available to order.
