Porsche also reaffirmed that deliveries of the electric Macan will commence in 2024, with an electric version of the 718 sports cars coming the following year. At first it will exist in parallel to the gas-powered Boxster and Cayman, but Porsche announced that "in the medium term" it will be exclusively available as an EV.
anyone know what “medium term” means? Is that a year, 2 years, 5 years?

The article states:”In a media roundtable, CEO Oliver Blume said that while it will depend on the region and the local regulations, the gas-powered variants have approximately two years left before their demise once the EV is launched…”

My fault, I only saw the first paragraph of the 718 section. Did not realize there was more after the ads, thank you!

I'm still not sure if I'm following their ICE plans. I'm guessing they wouldn't design the new gen with ICE to only have it for 2-3 years, so it would be the current 982 ICE 718 sold alongside the new EV 718?

I really hope that is the case. Need the ICE to keep going for a few more years LOL.

It would be cool to see a design of this (983?) with ICE, but seems really odd to do that for a 2-year project while now reporting to the street and stockholders.

I wonder if most of the Caymans will be EVs and then they'll make an ICE GT4 and GT4RS.

Most of us read it as the ICE cars have approximately two years from *now*, which aligns with the timeline of EV launching around the summer of 2025.

Porsche has been generally very clever in their marketing approach for all their cars over the years. I think they will not "bet the farm" on EV for the world market without solid fallback plans for ICE when and where needed, particularly the US market.

https://www.motor1.com/news/657059/p...ice-increases/

This seems to be the party line...at least for some time now: "Lutz Meschke also said the 718 electric replacements due around 2025 will also be up to 15 percent more expensive. The zero-emission Boxster and Cayman will replace the ICE models from day one"

The 718 and EV follow-on will be made on different lines so it's possible they're pumping out some final ICE special models and emptying the parts bins for a short period of overlap as the EV starts production.

Remember when they say 2025, they're likely talking MY...which starts a little over a year from now.

Anyone thinking they'll be ICE 718s in 2027 hasn't been listening to PAG Board public announcements.

Since the time of the birth of Porsche as a company, a primary focus of their marketing strategy has been their success on the racetrack. If they abandon ICE technology, that marketing strategy will cease to exist because I don't believe that EV motorsports will be successful. The cars may perform well, but the spectator will not be satisfied. The muted sound of EV's around a track is incomparable to the thunder of ICE powered cars. Formula E? Forget about it. Formula 1 lost audience and support when they changed engine specification that killed the high revving scream. Thunder boats lost appeal when they transitioned from WW2 aircraft recip engines to turbines. Sound is a big part of the spectator experience.

The SUV market might be able to sustain Porsche under those circumstances, but they will probably lose me as a customer. Just one guy's opinion and you know what that is worth.

Default Porsche backtracking on eliminating 718 ICEs according to Autoweek.

What the what?!?

Autoweek article on dual ICE & EV 718s instead of immediate ICE sunset.

Boxster EV will launch before Cayman EV so maybe a bit of overlap there.

Why do you interpret it that way? Seems more like the opposite to me, if anything. Cayman GT4 RS is already out, so would make more sense to EV the Cayman first while the Spyder RS is still in production. Either way, this article seems to indicate a next gen ICE 718 for a short (undetermined) period time.

New EV built along with current ICE 718. Just like the Macan Transition.
