Adjusted and lubed the headlight mechanism and took the last run on Clingmans Dome Road. Seven miles of fun is closed until April 1st as the park ranger locked the gate behind me. He looked at the steam coming off the back tires but I just shrugged my shoulders.

I just drove my 944 through slush and sleet and it was fantastic! I mean, shame on me for not checking the weather beforehand, but still, no salt was laid out and it was very confident in roundabouts and the lot!

Makes me wonder if not for the salt and other potentially bad drivers, why not drive a 944 in winter?

Precisely what I did for many years before Herbie got rear-ended.

With a proper set of winter tires, you should have no problems (assuming the snow is not too deep).

We don't go below the 'teens in the winter in TX but the 944 still is a good car in the cold. The heater starts working way sooner than almost every other car I've driven, and the great visibility is a safety feature when you're maneuvering in adverse conditions (as long as the hatch isn't covered in ice). The main drawback seems to be that the gearbox is hard to shift for the first couple minutes, but my synchros are worn. I almost have to double clutch the first few 1-2 shifts when it's below 20F outside.

I must say though, the windshield defrost is rather poor and takes seemingly forever to even get half of the view clear. Other than that, no complaints.

Are you using this button? If so, you may have a problem. If not - maybe you should.

I was told the ventilation on early cars was poor to now that I think about it. I'm still not fully understanding how these controls work either yet, time to pull out the manual for once.

I've also gotta repair the rear defrost wires in the hatch since they came loose.

Early car heater/defrost works amazingly well.
You have to move all three "sliders" to the right, turn the fan to max, and close all the dash vents (their slider goes up)...this forces all the air to come out the base of the windshield and defrost.

Although it does struggle when it's freezing temperatures out...but that's because the coolant can't even warm up in the first place lol

There was my mistake, I didn't close the dash vents...

Mystery solved! Thanks V2!

Ii dont really drive the 924 in the winter but when i start them up and stretch their legs during winter i dont even have to close the vents to get propper heating and defrost....then again i never leave them in the snow so there is no snow on the winscreen.

I swear, it's like they TRIED to make the controls confusing, you know? I'm constantly having to double-check which slider is which...

Oh FFS.
Somehow, I never actually noticed that. Because I'm apparently a moron.

Wow I never noticed that either. Someone should start a 944 "little known facts" thread for trivia like that.

It's funny, my last car before this 944 was a BMW e39 Touring, and there were guys that had had their e39s for 10 years and never knew you could open the glass portion of the hatch rather than just the whole hatch... Wish I could have seen their faces when someone finally showed them.
