Tires ordered today - couldn't figure out why I was getting nowhere with the aluminum lips, well they were anodized so wouldn't polish out - now stripped and bare aluminum, nice and shiny.

Well, I'm back to the saga of the heater hose clamps in my '83. After removing about 15 lbs of very old sound deadening material, styrofoam, carpet etc, I was able to get my head up into the passenger footwell and try to scope things out. I cannot get the carpet to come off the console, or the center console to come out, to get to the blasted clamps. There is only sheet metal behind the A/C system. the bottom of the heater unit is directly above the torque tube tunnel. I know that the hoses come out close to this area, but with the console in place (detached) and the carpet kinked up behind it. it is slow going.

Still contemplating cutting an access panel above the heater unit to go at it from the top. I would use speednuts and short sheetmetal screws to fasten it after this adventure is brought to a close. There is almost NO ROOM if the heater unit is in place between the upper sheet metal and the top of the heater on the inside. Lord, please help the poor soul that has to change out the heater core on one of these cars....I need some guidance and info as to how to remove the center console unit from the cables and the gauge wiring. Don't REALLY want to do the sheet metal thing as outlined above. thanks.

6 hours of ridiculously careful heat-gunning and extremely cautious scraping later, and I have... 3/4s of the ancient, dying, purple tint off the back hatch.

If it had been removed when it started failing 10-20 years ago, it probably wouldn't have been a big deal, but now? Ugh. It's bad enough I seriously contemplated just buying another hatch. I'm still wondering if I should have.

Ouch. I was going to do this and bought a steamer from a thrift store. 10 minutes in, working upside down and getting nowhere, I gave up. I've been quoted $80-100 for this job and will go that route. If it takes them 6 hrs they''ll be pissed!

Well, last night, I was able to finally put in the new heater hoses in my '83 and got them secured with new clamps. Clamps go onto the heater core spigots first, then the hose is threaded? onto the spigots and through the clamps. It would have helped a lot to get the clamp to stay still, but I wedged it with a screwdriver and it stayed put long enough to get the clamp tightened up. today I spent the afternoon buffing parts and getting them ready for paint. Mostly emergency brake handle and parts, rear shock bolts, and seat belt parts. rust everywhere. HMM..fix paint and or/replace?

If it wasn't broken and just discolored or corroded I cleaned and painted the hardware. I always figured if I didn't like the look I'd replace it afterwards. I ended up liking most of it. I love my car much more that it has my blood sweat and tears.

Go get 'em Rich!

Bought from sunset Porsche in Portland. Wheels & shipping about $1800. Could never find early off set and then places to refinish take too long. Brand new. Bought new Fuchs a few years ago for 911. Check their website
