It was "screw up" fix up time yesterday and today. Found the missing yellow zip tie while turning the engine over by hand. It must have slid down the chain and behind the IMS sprocket. I looked for it and didn't see it, when the heads were off, so figured I must have taken it off at some point. That's why the driver side cam sprocket didn't want to go back on without a fight, the other night. I've cut the zip tie before taking the pictures.
Then noticed that, while rotating the engine, it was rather difficult when it go to the opening point of the valves. It wasn't a stop of the pistons, just more effort that I used to see on other engines. So I re checked the cam timings and the passanger bank (Bank 2) was out 180 degrees. This means that, when the driver side cylinder was on the compression stroke, so was the diagonally opposing cylinder on the passanger side too. All the extra spring pressure is what I felt. There was no danger of mechanical contact because the cams were exactly 180 out. Regardless, this is one of the reasons I turned it over by hand. Had a feeling something will show up. Next are the valve covers and then the intake manifold.

Passanger side valve cover is on. Spark plug tubes, end caps and scavange pump is next. Then the other side. What does the F1 supposed to mean?

When do you plan on putting in the plugs and coils in Imre? I'd like to see how they are installed if you don't mind. It's on my to do list and I've never done them before. The motor is really coming along well

Mike, they are going in a few days from now but there really there is nothing to it. The two holes, one above and the other bellow the spark plug hole is what holds the coil to the valve cover. Remove the two bolts, with a 10mm socket, and the coil pull out. After that, it's just the matter of unscrewing the spark plug, but I will take pictures.
The driver side valve cover is now on.

No beer tonight so did a bit more work on the valve covers. The oil scavange pumps are on, the camshaft end plugs are in and so are the spark plug tubes. In the second picture, the top of the piston can be seen for the middle cylinder.
Once the intake and exhaust manifold are on, I'll start to scrub the engine down to get all the oil and dirt off. Should have done this first but, back then, I was in too much of a hurry to tear it down. Once it was apart, I didn't want to take a chance to accidentally wash some of that stuff into the engine.

It was a nice day today, engine degreaser was on sale at CT so, plugged all the holes up and washed it. Hard to see from the pics but all the oil/dirt/gravel came off, only the corrosion of aluminum is left.

Great progress, I am really enjoying this thread!
Have you finalized your direction vis-a-vis the IMS bearing?

Yes, as much as it kills me to fork out $650 for a small bearing, I'll be buying the LN one. Being a '99, it has the double row bearing so the LN unit should last forever.
Exhaust manifolds went on tonight. The starter and alternator should be back in the next few days. Tomorrow night the AC compressor will be on the agenda. The parts pile is down to almost nothimg. :-)

Soooooo
Does this mean you're not going to do the "direct clean oil feed" solution? Looked like a great idea when I read through the link. (Just Sayin")
