Hey i finally made the spotted thread. Sort of. Yup that A6 has 380000km on it. Old girl still looks good
2.8 is kind of a dog engine for such a big car but it will probably make a good car for junior.

Oil pan and exhaust is on. On coolant line connection is broken that i have to replace and then the IMS/RMS will be next. Forgot to order collector gaskets so went to Mufflerman and they matched up a pair. They fit better than the metal ones that was in there (less overhang), same inside dimater.

I hope the catalytics are still good.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye on it.

The spare keys came in today but the IMS bearing didn't but should be here next week. Today, fixed the broken coolant coupler. Since they break all the time, I didn't want to replace it with a fragile factory part so went and got a brass "3/8 one from Home Depot. Drilled out the coupler part and used the rest as a bracket. Worked out well.

Clive mentioned you might be contacting me on the oil tube change, https://rennlist.com/forums/9659480-post7.html is the tool I assembled, you need to change both the oil tubes and the two O-rings for each oil tube, they are not expensive and well worth the effort if you are in there changing the spark plugs already.

I used a rubber boat transom plug to take my sparkplug tubes out. Available in the 'marine' section of Cdn Tire or in Bass Pro I suppose. Under $10

IMS bearing came in today, will need to do some modification to the carrier to make it work, will post pics when that's all done.

Replaced the rear main seal tonight. I've pushed it in 1mm or so, to make sure it sits on an unused part of the crank. The old one looks original. Has the spring ring around it (like a conventional seal). The replacement was of a different material and design (probably and update). Used a 3"-1.5" PVC reducer with a 1.5" dishwasher plug as the seal driver. Worked well enough but next time, I will go with a 3"-2" reducer. The 1.5" was a little too small to easily control the seal, but with some patience, it worked.

Once the IMS bearing is in, the clutch and transmission can be bolted up and then, back it all goes into the car.

Well not sure if I was using it wrong, how can I when the principle should be very straightforward?! But I could only get this "tool" to work with the first tube, the thread then got chewed up and the rubber part started spinning, I tried to hold the flat metal circular plate with a large ViseGrip by lightly gripping it on the edge, but could not even get the second tube out, I had to throw out this mangled "tool" at that point.

That's why I came up with my tool which I felt to be much more idiot (i.e. me) proof.

Imo000, I understand you want to leave the oil tubes and O-rings to later when it becomes necessary, however with the age and mileage of the engine, you may want to consider changing at least the O-rings, and if you are going to pull the oil tubes out to change the O-rings, then it really is a good time to throw in a new set of new oil tubes. I would have re-used the oil tubes myself if they were metal, but they are plastic which is subject to the effect of heat and age, and they are a pain to get to once the engine is back in the car........

Anyway, just my 2 cents worth of contribution to this very informative and encouraging thread, and the posts you've provided.

Not sure what u did wrong. I've used the same plug 8 times without any problems on my 986

Me neither, despite most everyone else was able to get it to work, I still felt there were a couple of short-comings, so I gave up on it to come up with my own tool, which I think may even be a bit faster and at half the price.

BTW, how did you used the plug tool 8 times on your 6-cylinder 986 engine?!
