BTW, how did you used the plug tool 8 times on your 6-cylinder 986 engine?!
Had to do a couple twice. lol

The new IMS bearing is in. Got it from BOCA Bearings, part #: MR5204C-2RS/C3. It's a ceramic hybrid and is a little shorter than the stock double row bearing. I was hoping that it will be short enough to use a standard thickness snap ring but it wasn't. The difference was 0.45mm. The groove in the stock bearing is 1.25mm and the stock wire ring, that secures it in the IMS shaft is 1mm thick. Got a 49mm diameter snap ring and had my father grind it down at his shop to fit the new bearing. Made two, one at 0.83mm and a second, slightly thicker, at 0.85mm. After installing the new bearing into the IMS shaft, I've first tried the ticker snap ring. If it didn't fit, the thinner was going to follow but it fit just right. Also had a small spacer made at the shop to take up the two bearing width difference. It looks like a thick washer and is exactly the size of the difference that the two bearings have. Had to hand file a radius into the inside of it to clear the small radius on the IMS bearing flange. Before the new bearing was pushed in (with a small sledge hammer and a steel cylinder that was slightly smaller than the outer bearing race), I've tilted the engine and filled the IMS tube with 390ml of Rotella 5W40 T6 Synthetic engine oil. The idea is that if/when the bearing seal develops a leak, it will still get continues lubrication for a long time. This bearing being a hybrid unit and double row and with the extra oil in the tube should be good at least till the next clutch change. The bearing is cheap enough that it can be easily considered as a wearable item. I don't remember seeing anyone trying this configuration and posting about it, so this is all experimental. At the beginning, I'll be checking the oil filter on a regular basis for signs of bearing failure. If all checks out, the inspection interval will be longer. I've talked this theory over with Rod (Gaugeman69) many times and I think this will be another good solution but, we'll see.

I did my spark plugs last fall, and the scuttle butt on the interwebs is that the tubes fail. So I ordered 6 new tubes (came w extra seals) to replace my non-leaky tubes.

This summer, I noticed a couple of drips of oil on my garage floor. Traced it back to the tubes. I replaced a couple tubes with the old ones (or new seals - I can't remember)

6 + 2 = 8.

IMS bearing nut is on. Used a technique that was developed by another RL'er from the 996 forum. Flywheel is on but not yet tightened, also installed a new oil filter and filled the engine with oil. The last new part was finally installed (the oil filter), the new parts box is now empty.

When the flywheel gets torqued down, the spark plugs will be removed and the engine will be cranked over with the starter, to prime the oiling system.

Standard Permatex RTV silicone and blue loctite on the bolt and nut threads. The RTV is just a secondary back up.

Rest of the clutch went in last night and zip tied as many lines as I could. Some were easy to slide off because of all that oil that went through the intake for so long.
Tonight picked up a new release bearing for the clutch at NAPA (for a '98 Audi A4), and installed it with the transmission. Man that thing was heavy. Got it in alone but, it took some creative engine tilting to line it up. Next is the slave cylinder and then time to slide it all under the car.

I love this thread... It is my favorite right now on all of Rennlist.

Much better than that 8-pager over on the 996 forum where the OP's engine stops, and he assumes it is toast (with all the attendant piling on) and flatbeds it over to Flat-6 to find out that it is, err, umm... the alternator!

Where did you source the hybrid bearing?

They are available at BOCA Bearings. Rod, Gaugeman69, found it for me on the net. The operating limit is 325F, if the engine ever gets this hot, I'll have other issues than the bearing. However, I really want to put some miles on it before declaring it as another option.

Really enjoying this thread too. Also will lend a hand if you need when re-installing.

Regards,

Thanks for the offer but I had my father over to give a hand. The old man enjoys helping out every now and then. Before it was lifted, I cranked the engine over with the starter to prime the oiling system. Cranked nice, there is definitely compression there. Had to dig out the 928 for the fall drive tomorrow so didn't do much on the 996.
