Went to Rockford Ill. and towed home the next project car. It's a non runner '99, one owner, DD, with 200K miles. Now the fun begins. These boxer engines are alien to me but how hard can it be? :)

I've been meaning to do the same, keep us posted on your progress, if you don't mind this is on my watch list.

The add for this car was posted in OT, under the Chevy powerred 911 thread. :)

+1.

Stuff a 400+ hp LS3 in it and have fun with the RS point-bys at track days:evilgrin:

Cool project congrats!!!

pontifex4 07-11-2012 01:15 AM

Did you really tow that with a Liberty?

jumper5836 07-11-2012 10:01 AM

Wow 200k miles! I'd really look into giving flat6 or LN a call and have a 3.4 to 3.8 conversion done.

Now THAT is jumping in with both feet! Good on you for having the courage! So is there an engine in there already? Or nothing?

Cosmo Kramer 07-11-2012 12:37 PM

Nice one Imre. Any idea as to why it doesn't run?]

More pics when you get a chance.

The engine is in there, all complete and no holes in the block. The dealer took it in as a trade for a new Boxter. The owner said it started making a lot of noise and died. He didn't wnat to spend any more money on it so he traded it in as-is, without any diagnosys. Or so I was told. Will pull the oil pan in the next couple of days to see what happenning in there.

In worse case, I can make all the money back by parting it out BUT that is the last resort.

Sounds like fun

Good luck !

I also vote for stuffing a V8 in there. It's a 200k mile 996 - why not?

Imo000 07-12-2012 12:04 PM

Wellll.....I might start buying lottery tickets. Last night, drained and strained the oil, pulled the oil pan and cut the filter aparts. No signs of IMS faliure. :) But found some small pits of plastic in the bottom of the pan that look like parts of a chain tensioner. one of the codes I pulled inricated a problem with bank 1 cam and another for evaporative leak so I'm starting to think this engine has more than one issue. Either way, lack of any significant amount of metal in the oil means the block isn't wrecked. I'll be digging into it more over the weekend. :)

Imre one of the signs of an impending failure is the plastic bearing reatainer breaks up and falls out. I think you are definitely on to something tho. IF a tensioner has failed you may be golden. if the tensioners are fine then i would revisit the ims bearing .
