Dragged home one of these.

The stem seals came in today too. Pulled the old ones from the head, the one that had the bent valves and lapped in the 6 new exhaust valves. The valve stem seals were labelled as antique car parts. Came from Pelican too but by USPS and had no extra cost but, this package was only $61. The new valves lapped in very nice. So far the parts are around $1050, but the IMS bearing and a clutch set, with new fluids will double this.
I think this is the halfway point of the project.

The passenger side head, the one with all the bent valves, is ready to be installed. Used a 10mm socket and an extension to push on the new valve stem seals. Then slightly tap the end of the extension with a small hammer to get the seals bottom out. The bottom, smaller valves, are the new ones. Tomorrow the replacement of the driver side steam seals is the plan. Its a step back as I didn't want to replace the seals at first, so I already assembled that head a couple weeks ago.

Yes, slowly the engine is getting cleaner and cleaner. Finished the othet head today too. Brake clean and closed garage door makes for an interesting combination. Didn't take a picture as ot look tge same as the other head. However, when I was flipping the head head over a piece of the water pump impeller fell out. The pump looks new so must be from the failed old one. Read posts where this can cause localnhot spots that cracks the head. Tomorrow, I'll go through all the head coolant ports and look for any more impeller parts.

Yup but that's the way the market goes. At least it sold locally. Funds go straight to the LN IMS bearing.

Three Wheelin'
looks like a fun parts cleaning project - with some mechanical repair thrown in to break up the day.
I redirected here from your water pump impeller post on the 996 forum. Great read. Damn well looking forward to when you spark it up.
You've probably already done this, but a close inspection for micro-cracks in the heads and on the cylinder walls is indicated. Those early motors did d-chunk a bit.
Have you blown air through the cooling ports in the heads to catch any fine impeller bits that may be floating around?

Had a closer look at the heads and the cylinders and they all looked good. Today will be the cleaning ofnthe cooling ports, including blowing compressed air through them. When the fluids were drained, there were no signs of intermix. The passanger front cylinder has a pretty good dent from the valve hitting the top edge of the cylinder. I spent some time lookimg at it to make sure it didn't crack the bore. The dent is above the top compression ring so it not effect performance. If you zoom in on the pic that shows the clean pistons, you can see the dent in the right lower corner of the picture (5 o'clock position of that cylinder).
Half the time is spent cleaning things.

Passanger head is on. Only torqued down to 30Nm to do a leakdown test. It's a home made leakdown tester that I borrowed from another RL-er.
All cylinders on this bank are 2-3%, so the rings are good. Finally its starting to look like an engine again.

The passanger head is torqued down. The valve contact marks on the driver side bank have been smoothed down. Used a small grinding bit and a cordless drill, before installing the second head.

Driver side head is torqued down. Leakdown is around 3-4% on this side. Looks like the rings are sealing well. When all done, should be a good running engine.
