FF, I actually have and was a big fan of Mika. I remember watching that pass live and will never forget it. In my mind, the best pass I have ever witnessed in F1.
The reason I didn't pick Mika was that they had Adrian Newey back then .
Alonso and Renault did it without any all stars.

Ferrari and Alonso have tasted blood and now they are going for the kill. I can see Vettel and Hami taking each other out on the 1st turn. Hopefully, Alonso will make a good start.
If Vettel takes Hami out, is it to help his teammate? team orders?lol

Alonso pips Vettel to Singapore GP pole

Fernando Alonso has taken pole for the second race in succession with a strong performance in qualifying at Singapore.

The Spaniard saw off a late challenge from Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel to secure the top spot.

The German began his final flying lap in a provisional seventh place after making a mistake earlier in the session, and despite being comfortably up on Alonso's time through the first sector, he faded over the remainder of the lap and was left in second, 0.067s down on Alonso's bets time of 1m45.390s.

While Ferrari celebrated Alonso's success, it was a very different story for team-mate Felipe Massa, who will start from the back of the grid following a suspected engine problem during Q1.

McLaren locked out the second row, with Lewis Hamilton taking third ahead of Jenson Button, leaving championship leader Mark Webber a disappointed fifth alongside the Williams of Rubens Barrichello. The Brazilian's team-mate Nico Hulkenberg fell just shy of making it through to Q1 and finished 12th fastest behind Sebastien Buemi, although he will start from 17th due to a five-place grid penalty.

Mercedes got both its cars into the top 10, with Nico Rosberg seventh and Michael Schumacher ninth, the pair bookending Renault's Robert Kubica, and Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi rounded out the top 10.

Massa was not the only driver whose session was compromised by problems. Vitaly Petrov's hopes of cracking Q1 were ended when he spun and broke his right-rear suspension against the barriers during Q2, although he was still in with a shot of remaining in the top 10 before his time was finally overhauled by Buemi and Hulkenberg in the last couple of minutes.

Virgin won bragging rights in the battle of the new teams when Timo Glock took 18th, with a late push from Lotus' Heikki Kovalainen allowing the Finn to get ahead of Lucas di Grassi.

Jarno Trulli was 18th ahead of F1 returnee Christian Klien, who left his HRT team-mate Bruno Senna to join Massa on the back row.

With that grid it looks like there are going to be some fireworks going in to T1 tomorrow. One of the best qualifying sessions of the season IMO....ebbed and flowed right up to the last moment. Great to watch.

Regarding Singapore 2008, how can you be a WDC, qualifying 15th, and not ask why you are fueled so light?
Many people in the paddock were suspicious and curious, only to be shocked at the coincidence of the timing of the "crash" and his decision to pit.

As for involvement, some have speculated that Driver X in the investigation was Alonso, who agreed to provide secret testimony in exchange for keeping his super license, which would likely have been subject to revocation or suspension by the FIA.
It should also be noted that it was also suspected that Bernie helped arrange the final outcome.

But you're probably right...he had no knowledge of anything and was merely "in the right place at the right time".

BTW, I seem to remember that another driver beat Schumacher...some guy named Mika something...I think.

Based on watching the cars in qualifying, I believe that RBR is much better on the prime tire relative to the rest of the field.
I believe Alonso will suffer rear tire degradation in the options and that RBR will quickly go to the prime and run the rest of the race without further tire stops, while Ferrari will have to favor an option tire strategy.

Unless of course it rains or there us a shemozzle in T1 or there is a safety car at just the right time...

Ferrari to replace Massa's engine

Ferrari will change Felipe Massa's engine for the Singapore Grand Prix, even though the Brazilian said the problem that hit him in qualifying was related to the gearbox.

The Ferrari driver, who has already used the eight allocated engines for the season, stopped on track during Q1 and was unable to set a time.

Although Massa said the problem was with the gearbox, the team will use the opportunity to replace the engine with a new one - the ninth of the season - since the Brazilian will start from the back of the grid anyway.

The team will also replace his gearbox.

"I had a problem with the gearbox which seized unexpectedly, without giving any warning and so I had to stop out on the track: now we have to understand exactly what happened," said Massa.

"We will change the engine as a precaution, also taking into account the fact I am last on the grid.

"I'm expecting to have a very complicated race, especially as we are at a track where overtaking is very difficult, but it's true that anything can always happen: rain, safety car, who knows!

"I am very disappointed of course because today we had a very competitive car, as Fernando proved. I like this track but it seems that it does not bring me much luck..."

I don't know how abrasive the surface is and how long the option will last, but it is clear that RBR is much faster on the prime

Good race ... I see Hamilton vs Webber as a case where both drivers raced hard and neither one made a bone headed move. It was just a racing incident. Congrats to Alonso and Ferrari but I wonder if Red Bull should have kept Vettel out there for 1-2 extra laps after Alonso pitted?

PS: Speed TV sucks ***. As soon as the F1 race ends, they have to leave and give us 3+ hours of their pre-race NASCAR bull####. For crying out loud, finish the F1 race coverage and then switch to NASCAR. 10-15 minutes is not going to kill you. I never watch NASCAR, but tell me is their pre-race coverage longer than the actual race?
