What "should" happen is:
AutoX leads to DE leads to time trialing, leads to racing...

And then life gets in the way.

Some of us buy the wrong cars (I know I did) and end up struggling with the high hp car in DEs, and driving slower than the car is capable of... Such is life...

Not really sure why we have to put each other down for our chosen choices. Can't we all just agree that VR's avatar is kickarse?

People that **** me off and I have no problem putting down/taunting:
1) DEers that think they are racing
2) Racers that are 10 secs off the pace, and then "race" the leaders as they come around to lap them
3) DEers that have never raced yet comment on racing
4) Racer that think the people in front of them are always cheating
5) DEers that think all racers are "dangerous"
6) Racers that think all DEers are slow
7) Anyone slower than me
8) Anyone faster than me
9) People who pay to pro race, yet are worse than me
10) Anyone with a crappier car than mine
11) Anyone with a nicer car than mine

People I have no problem with:
A) DEers that drive well
B) Racers that drive well

I've always liked this:

In DE's, you drive as fast as you can on the racing line.
In Racing, you drive as fast as you can off the racing line.

Now, after 8 pages, there's a corollary:

In DEs there are a few uptight, hypersensitive people.
In Racing there are a few uptight, hypersensitive people.
But in both, nobody likes a whiner.

+1, If I could afford it I would do more DE's, but I figure if I'm going to spend the money I might as well do it in a competitive environment and have more fun while doing so. I didn't make it to a single DE this year, and I'm not too eager to go back. At the last race in practice sessions I was getting bored running fast laps by myself, I think the same thing will happen when I do a DE again. Plus if I win a club race I may win a trophy! If I had a data acquisition system and I could really work on my driving it might be another story.
Budget is my #1 factor in racing, which is why I just bought my second set of NT-01's(which I get 2 race weekends from). My friends make fun at me because I don't ask 'how fast is this tire?', I ask 'how long will this tire last?'.

Is there such thing as a 'racing line'? The only line I know of is a qualifying line.

Why do some racers cop an attitude with DE drivers? Any racer knows that their car could be written off or damaged seriously when they enter every race. Even the chance of personal injury is greater. To think otherwise is not realistic. To stay in the front of the pack you need to push the envelope of your skill and the car's capabilities. While damage is possible in a DE it is far less likely, and in the faster DE run groups it is possibly the safest as the drivers in those groups have the most experience and will usually push hardest only when it is safe.

I think that because of this difference in expectation it is natural for a racer to feel superior in some way. As a person who has raced and now just DEs. I just don't want to take the chance that my pristine GT3 will be damaged or totaled. I also have respect for most of the people who race but find that most of them started in DE but now equate it as comparable to masturbation vs the sex of racing. DE is something you do when you wish you were racing. Due to the restrictions on passing it can never have the same level of excitement or human emotion. As others have said, racing has its own food chain and there is always a better, faster, more expensive series that will look down on you as a jerk-off all the way up to F1.

I believe it was Barnaby Conrad (not Hemmingway) who said: "There are but three true sports--bullfighting, mountain climbing, and motor-racing. The rest are merely games." DE is a game. A damn fun one.

I was amazed how many pages posted so fast in this thread, but it does show there is a level of tension between racing and DE driving. I happen to do both, but agree with Charlie that after you start in racing, your attitude changes as to how good you are and how to get better. Both racing and DE pecking orders are related to how fast you get around the track though. In DE's you can make your car faster to gain this respect. In racing, you need to do this within your class rules so one would expect it is skill level is what needs to improve. I enjoy DE's as a social event more now and take less emphasis on the driving other than honing skills and working students/other drivers. Both are great to do and just getting out there should earn respect versus the virtual driver that reads magazines and waxes their garage queen.

Funny true story from another guy who races I know:

He was at a local party in the Philadelphia area and starting talking to someone casually. The women asks him: "So what do you for fun when your not working?" Racer X replies, "Well, I race cars during the summer (NASA Honda series) and have some sponsorship to do so." He thought that was really cool to say to a good looking woman. Her response " Oh, my husband races cars, you should talk to him about racing!" Racer X, very calmly replies. "Well, this is real wheel to wheel stuff, not DE driving" , Her response, "Oh yah, he use to do that to!"
Racer X, "What is your husbands name?" , response, "David Donohue, he is right over there......." Racer X, Oh, that's okay he really won't be interested in the type of racing I do, he is at another level". (tail between legs, go get a beer)
