Roughness is a great word for it lol. But really it's just a totally different animal. 1 minute or less, never exceeding 70mph... just not the same as being on a track. Yes you learn a LOT about car control, but there's nothing smooth about auto-X.

Sorry if confusing
slower car pulled off race line
in doing so he entered off line blocking apex driving around the corner right at the time I would have on race line entered and hit apex
Slower cars will do this thinking they are helping
Hold your line and let faster cars pass please. Trust me. We will get around you!

All the things that a complete newbie had to keep focused on and coming up the esses and seeing the flagger indicating faster car going to pass, and I remember the instructor asking, "what did that flag mean, and where are you going to give point by?"
Geez, the two or three times I made the mistake of going off line to let a faster driver (or car) past my first weekend HPDE, that instructor drilled it through my helmet, not only not to do it, but the reasons for not doing it.
After session talks, he detailed the situation that I put us in and the car passing us.
I sure learned, "check your mirrors and MAINTAIN the driving line!"
Just another shout out, thank you to all the instructors, you are well appreciated.

It’s predictability that you’re talking about and I agree. The 12 hour cars are mixed in speed but predictably so. It is scary when you come up on a Z06 going 20 mph slower than expected (for example) nothing against corvettes.

Probably the best newbie student I ever had was an ex professional bicycle road racer in a Mini on slicks. I swear he was as fast as me in some of those turns his first day on track. That was a great weekend.

There was an exercise that was a curved slalom course that ended in a sharp left turn going into a parking spot made of cones. Students were instructed to hit the brakes and hard turn in and park the car, stopping just in front of the cones. At turn in, speed was encouraged. The purpose of the exercise was to show one could steer while hard braking with anti-lock brakes - recall that this is street survival, not track or even auto-cross driving.
Most students were pretty shy, went in slow, didn't really commit to the brakes and didn't park the car cleanly. If they were aggressive, cones usually went flying. This chick in the Mini entered the end of the exercise very hot, turned it in and simply parked it clean and square. She got a standing ovation from the cone catchers as I exclaimed, "Holy ****! I don't think I could have done that!" Picture running down the isle in the grocery store parking lot at a good clip and just stabbing the car in a spot between two parked cars, square in the center, without hitting anything all the while setting off the anti-lock brakes the whole time on the brake pedal.
I'll never forget it and had a great event as well.

There are other jokes e.g.
What's the difference between a Corvette and a sheep? You're more embarrassed if your friends see you in a Corvette.
