Returned from a blistering day at Thunderhill yesterday. While the weather was blisteringly hot, the friends and company were very cool. Nothing like an open track day with all experienced drivers that know each other. It would have been perfect if the weather wasn't crazy hot!!! The GT4 was measuring air intake temps of 117+F. Pavement temps were measuring 135F! Notes from yesterday:
1) The GT4 performs like a CHAMP in the extreme heat. This is a real GT car, folks. Coolant temps never went above 204F, and oil temps never went above 252F. Despite increasing temps. Despite 3 different drivers pounding on the car and putting 200 track miles on it.
2) Brought the GT3 and GT4 to drive. Between 3 drivers, 150 miles were put on the GT3 and 200 miles on the GT4. Draw your own conclusions, but I really had a hard time deciding which car I preferred to drive. Both are very fun. The power in the GT3 is addicting, but the GT4 just does what you want it to do.
3) Not only was the heat a bummer in terms of lap times and comfort, but it was a big confounding variable. I brought my oem wheels with cup2 AND my new OZ wheels with re71r to see if there was a lap time difference. However, by the time I put the OEM cup2s back on the car in the afternoon, the heat was substantially higher, so no real conclusions can be drawn.
4) That being said, I love the RE71R. Lap times rose and peak speeds were dropping from 133 down to 128mph after I switched to OEM cup2, but that was after lunch when the heat really started to come down hard. I don't think anything fair can be said about performance difference. That being said, both handled the heat well, and I felt like both were similar in performance. However, I did noticed that the re71 talked to me more than the cup2. Cup2 talk as well, but the re71r gives you plenty of warning and time that the car is about to break loose. When it does, it is very progressive and controllable. I'm an official believer of the re71r tires. I won't be going back to cup2.
5) Brake pads. Ran the project mu club racer pads for the first time. The pads definitely bite better than OEM. However, I was getting some fade after several laps. I'm not sure if it's the pad or the tires overheating from the oppressive heat that day. I will know for sure when I go to laguna next weekend. Cooler temps, but much heaver brake usage. So far, I'm satisfied with them.
6) Ran consistent 2:01 lap times despite the heat. 0.6 seconds slower than my last time out, but ambient temps were 30 degrees lower that day. Man, I wish it was 70 degrees in Willow all year around!!!
Here is the video (lower right corner is coolant temps, and the center gauge shows intake temps):

I'll take photos of the re71 tires, OZ inner barrel of the wheel, and calipers tomorrow when I do a wheel swap.
