Thanks for the video again Jim.
Looking at my incident (not the solo one early on), it looked like I went too deep, but it didn't feel that way when it happened. Sorry again for that.
Nice close race there for lap after lap, very entertaining.

Tom no issue I remember braking harder than normal as I thought I was getting close to Jim. In looking at the video I had lots of room, I always think I am closer then I am, I am not sure if it is my fov or it is just the sim. Need to run with someone some night bumper to bumper to better understand the distance available, anyone want to wreck a lot

Epic battle between the four of you !! Wow, the video is entirely on you
I found this info on the iracing forums about setting the correct FOV !! Happy reading

The optimal angles have to do with how big your monitors are and how close you sit to them. Basically, you want to try to angle each monitor so that it is at a right angle to your head when you look at each one in turn. That maximizes there effectiveness. So if you had 60" monitors and you sat 30" from them you would want them angled at 90 deg. But if you have 20" monitors and you sit at 40" from them you need a much more shallow angle.
You can do the math just by calculating the angle to the edge of your display. Going back to right triangles we know that:
A = atan(a/b)
We need to double A to get the full FOV angle and halve the width of the monitor to get a. That gives us the formula:
angle = 2 * atan( monitorWidth / (2 * viewDist) )
So for our 60" wide monitor with 30" distance our ideal angles would be angle = 2*atan(60/(2*30)) or 90 deg. While our 20" monitor at 40" away would be 2*atan(20/(2*40)) = 28 deg.
In windows 7 (and vista) you can calculate atan() using the scientific mode in the calculator. Type Inv, then select Tan-1.
For an added bonus... You can calculate the total FOV by multiplying the angle A by 6 instead of by 2, that is 3 monitors * 2. Since there are three monitors and we are only calculating 1/2 of the viewing angle for each monitor. That gives us the formula:
fov_total = 6*atan(a/2b )
Or more generically:
fov_total = numMonitors * 2 * atan( monitorWidth / (2 * viewingDistance) )
Again with the first example we get 6*atan(60/(2*30))=270 deg. And the second example gives us 6*atan(20/(2*40)) = 84 deg.
By playing around with this it should be clear that the best solution is to get as big of a monitor as possible and sit as close to it as you can stand. For you single monitor people, you can calculate your monitors ideal FOV with the first formula as well. So my 26" monitor at work is 32 inches from my face. That gives me an optimal FOV of 2*atan(26/(2*32)) = 44 deg FOV. If I pushed my monitor to only 20" away it would give me a much wider fov of 66 deg.

Wow. Didn't realize it was that good to watch fight for positions 4 to 7. The risk at the hairpin didn't pay off but at least I wasn't no Maldonado this time. Lol on the carnage at the very end. Anthony, I gotta up my game now to catch you.

Hello all-
I've been lurking on the site for years but this is my first post. I've been playing too much iRacing lately and need to join a league to feed my habit. I see the Rennlist league is closed to new applicants. Do you guys have room for one more?
Thanks,
Kyle

Sure thing Kyle. Post up or PM your iracing name and I'll send you an invite. The only rule is you have to be nice. You can make mistakes on track and have civil discussions. If you are mean to another racer, you risk the boot.

It is so hard to start in the middle of the pack and make it through the first lap. I'm not whining, just saying I'm motivated to qualify better.
