2019 Cayenne Battery
#256
Doing some quick math roughly 250,000 Cayennes produced world wide in model years 2019-2021. Avg battery replace/repair $3000. An extra $750 million in revenue. Add in all the 911’s too….way over a Billion $.
Plus add all the money they don’t to pay out for repairs from voided warranties.
That is assuming the battery is only changed once before the car hits the scrap
heap.
The accountants are running the show.

I'll try to perform all my CS maintenance myself and avoid the dealer as much as I can, just in case and to see what happens too.

Dealership is saying my low battery indicator isn't clearing with the battery software update. Car has been running / starting fine. is it only a matter of time?
I've replaced my own battery on other cars. Is this something that can be DIY?

Yes, DIY is easy. To satisfy yourself of this, pull up the cover under the front passenger floormat. Arguable whether “registration” is needed via OBD. The OCD among us would use an OBD tool to register the new battery but my guess is no codes will be created if registration is not done.

What are you saying is not DIY: a. battery replacement, or b. registration?

The lithium battery has a canbus network connection.
While it would certainly be possible to make that plug and play I am also betting that Porsche won’t be able to resist doing a solid for their dealers and requiring PIWIS to correctly configure and assign the new battery parameters/network address for the car.

Sounds like a big market opportunity for someone to come up with an AGM conversion kit and make a few million dollars.
I personally would rather pay $300-400 for an adaptation kit to AGM than $4000 from a dealer for something that'll just fail again.

Dealer service telling me that a sensor inside the battery is bad, not related to software update they performed in November to resolve low battery message. Trying to determine course of action right now. If battery needs replacement, and I am a few months out of factory warranty, will be interesting to see if Fidelity Platinum warranty covers it... the service rep tells me there are 3 other cars here right now with the same issue. Recall?

Looks like they specifically exclude batteries unless you have a hybrid.

If it truly is the ‘sensor’ in the battery and they are not making stuff up… that’s pretty egregious as the shunt used to measure current in/out of the battery is less than $20 (500a shunt is about ~$15 on Amazon).
If you’re curious how state of charge monitoring works search for ‘Coulomb Counting’. If you go far enough back in this thread there are pictures of the inside of the lithium battery and the shunt is extremely obvious, right on top along the negative terminal. These LFP batteries are actually extremely simple and one the size of the Cayenne’s likely has a BoM of maybe $500.

There are claims that alternator charging is modified or adapted by virtue of a new battery being registered. Stated reason is that a new battery requires less aggressive alternator current supply. I am neutral as to whether this is fact, or not.
