The best way to find out if a fluid change is due is to plug it in and read the V40 transmission wear integrator - oil. If the value is greater than 145 kWh, the oil must be changed.

While in theory that might seem correct, as it's what the manual says, in practice if you wait that long with an older transfer case, you will kill it. I would not ever go based on that number to determine a fluid change need, especially with an older transfer case... you'll have symptoms WAY before that number is reached.

I'd say that's the "best way" to kill your transfer case!

True. I believe older transfer cases are destined to fail no matter what... Just a matter of time, and changing the fluid will only extend the inevitable.

For reference, I had a transfer case with only 19 kWh on the wear integrator value and it was stuttering like crazy due to clutch degradation. Yes, just nineteen!

Readers of the above posted info: do not wait until 145kWh to change your oil; that's not a good idea!!!

IMHO.

- If you have a pre GNC clutch pack transfer case, the clutch pack will fail regardless of the frequency of lube changes or use of "best" available lube. It is probably a waste of resources to be proactive. https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-...l#post16271057

- There is a balance trying to be struck between the clutch plates and their coating, the fluid used and the closing pressure on the plates. We are all part of Porsche's mistakes and Porsche is using our transfer cases as a giant experiment. I call it an experiment because I do not think they have it figured out yet.

- Been down the transfer case R&R road a few times. On my 5th TC. 14k miles so far on the latest one. For me, the GNC as a solution is yet to be determined. post #10 https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-...e-failure.html

A forum member noted that in 2019, Porsche went to a different coating, "diamond coating", but I have not seen any bulletins. post # 9 https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-...ed-plates.html . It might be just another name for the GNC to make us feel better. Can anyone help with providing a Porsche bulletin related to an updated non-GNC coating ?

Just wanted to make a follow-up on this, Porsche NL didn't accepted the transfer case replacement under warranty and I've tried my luck on Porsche AG (Germany), they also didn't accepted which was not surprising. I ended up to visit a private Porsche service to get it repaired for 2K euros here in the south Netherlands. My car drives buttery smooth again. My dealer said that it could easily make 80K KM if I don't push it so hard.

My 2016 Base Cayenne (958) purchased in 2015 has just been diagnosed with yet another transfer case problem. 1st replacement at 7,933 miles covered under warrantee. 2nd replacement at 14,002 covered under warrantee. This latest fail is at 37,000 miles and is 3 months out of warrantee. This will be the 4th transfer case in the car. Dealer claims they could not do anything to assist and recommended calling Porsche. Will cost $3,500 to repair. Called Porsche and filed a case. Advised will take 5 days or so for them to get back to me. New transfer case will have a 2-year warrantee. I'm not in a good place with this car right now.

There is a 7-year unlimited mile warranty on the transfer case.

Given that my input to the original post is #1380, it may not be read by anyone. Still, I wanted to contribute...

In early July, I bought a 2011 Cayenne S with 170,000 miles on it. No paperwork at all. Excellent test drive, very good-looking car, so I took the leap. Price was really low. Three hundred mile trip home, I noticed occasional jerking pulling away from a stop. I had read enough prior to purchase that I knew this could be a TC issue. I decided to first try new fluid.

The old fluid was a medium brown in color. The new fluid, of course, was clear. After driving about 10 miles with the new fluid, I noticed that there was no more jerking when pulling away from a stop. I have covered another 300 miles since the change of fluid, and have no problems that would point to the TC. I only post this in the event that some folks are having issues, but have not changed out the fluid. Very simple to do, and could save a lot of money.
