I think there is a value you can read from ODB / PIWIS that is something to do with the wear or age. Not sure if it is simply a counter or if there is a sensor of some type in the transfer case. Whatever it is, is doesn't seemed to have saved a single failure!

2018 Cayenne V6 - 26k miles - dealer replaced transfer case under CPO warranty

Felt I had shifting issues actually felt like it was shifting when it wasn’t. Dealer replaced the Transfer case Monday all is great. 2017 CS with 17,000 miles.

 

Hi all, I have 2011 Cayenne S at 216K KM here in The Netherlands, I've been having issues about the TC and jerky shifting, my local dealer inspected and mentioned about possible TC replacement. Can I have this replacement under warranty by any chance? Thanks in advance. Will keep here updated.

Edit: they've changed the transfer case oil a week ago but didn't worked.

 

Are you asking strangers on the internet, most of which are in a different country, if they will kindly authorize your warranty claim?

According to this forum.. I've seen that there is 10 year warranty for the transfer case from date of first purchase. So you might be just past it. But worth asking Porsche to see if they'll cover it anyway. They may decide to at least pay for the transfer case and you pay for labor.

This is from your in service/delivery date. Its likely with a 2021 that your warranty has expired at this point.

 

I just had mine replaced under CPO @ 104,000

It was replaced previously by original owner at 44,500

 

Somewhat naive question.... If a vehicle has yet to present symptoms of a failing transfer case and has never had its transfer case oil changed in 11 years and 86K miles, would changing the oil from now on prevent a failure? Is changing the transfer case oil on a yearly/10K miles basis a "guarantee" to prevent from it failing? Or is this new maintenance schedule a "delay of the inevitable" i.e.- there is no escaping the fact that the transfer case will fail. This is especially important to those of us who have vehicles that are not covered under the extended warranty.

 

I have a 2011 CTT with about 48K miles on it. Purchased it last year with about 35K on the odo. Car is out of warranty. I changed the transfer case oil twice when i got it to start fresh. Changed it again at about 10K miles. I doubt its a guarantee to prevent its failure but it does give me a little piece of mind. It's simple enough to change on my own and i can be done in 20 mins. Haven't had any issues and i do notice an improvement after I change it out. It would probably help for me to also do a transmission fluid change... maybe later this year.

 

I'm waiting for some political situation to calm down (Panama) in order to finalize the purchase of a 2011 CTT and have budgeted ±$6K to bring it up to spec with all of the consumables/oils/filters replaced, but was left wondering if the TC issue is something that could be prevented by doing frequent TC oil changes or if it's a "time bomb" like the 957s and their cardan shafts/coolant pipes (it's a matter of when they fail, not if they fail...).

 

i would say that frequent changing of the TC oil will probably minimize any apparent issues and prolong the life but it isn't a fail safe for it never going bad, if that makes sense.

 

The effectiveness of changing the transfer case fluid depends on which transfer case you have, and the type of driving you do.

The newest transfer cases with the reinforced clutch plates which are not failing, and don't need frequent oil changes like the older versions. In the older transfer cases, the clutch plates break down and fill the oil with clutch debris which will further accelerate the clutch wear over time. In general, if you freeway drive/cruise all the time, then frequent changes aren't needed as often as if you do lots of stop and go driving. Older transfer cases driven constantly in stop and go driving, can benefit from oil changes as frequently as every 3k miles. But if you're freeway cruising all the time, then an oil change might be needed in 50k-80k miles!
