The 997 GT3/RS Cars For Sale Thread...
#6466
Quick update on my end: I remain on the hunt for that unicorn 997 GT3 with the right color, mileage, condition and provenance. I absolutely loved speedskier GT Silver one above but I just couldn’t find a way to make it work out logistically with me being on the other end of the country from him. GLWS speedskier!
In the interim though, I ended up getting this one from a local RLer who treated it like a baby - it’s a 1 of 1 PTS ice blue 991.1 GT3. The mods are stunning but all the original OEM parts are also available. The car sounds beyond insane... https://rennlist.com/forums/market/1236444
I figure I’ll get a garage lift setup for when I find that 997 of my dreams (or I just need to build a bigger garage...)

I owned 3062. Bought it from PNH quite a few years ago. I sold it about 2 years ago. Looks like the wheels and mirrors have been repainted. If anyone is interested in the car PM me for info.

Saw the same thing. Wondering when the mileage filter gets tossed out on potential cars to be for sale. With only 3 cars listed on a major site. The buyers will have to jump on to what’s available or wait. Glad I bought in when I did

bought in OCT and that seems to be the biggest blessing of 2020 (for me)!

I say all that ^^^ because I am of the belief that in another 10 yrs +,... these cars will follow the same historical trends that my 964 Turbo did (it's pristine w/ several BestinShow Concours wins, gets all the best in care & maintenance), we're up to 80k miles now, we've driven the **** out of it for 15 years now,... and it still now commands $120k.
So eventually, in another 10+ yrs, these 997 GT cars could even be up in the 60K mileage range or above, and it won't make a difference. They will still command a premium price. Scarcity will drive the market, and regular yearly buyers for all the newer models in the coming 10 yrs will also help pull the prices up.
So my mantra is Drive them Guilt Free!!!

It's interesting that most 997 GT3 buyers consider cars with over 30K miles "high-mileage" cars. That's an average of less than 4K miles per year (for .2s)! I agree and am driving the snot out of mine. I've driven 9K miles in 15 months of ownership and have a road trip in the GT3 to Palm Springs planned next month with some friends. There is a dearth of GT3s on the market and scarcity will only get worse moving forward as popularity and demand increases. For the prospective buyers out there, widen your net and don't be afraid of getting a car with higher miles. As long as it is well-maintained it should be considered. Best of luck to everyone out there.
hmmm, mileage filter .... I agree. Here's my take on that, .... my mileage filter was (when I was in market to buy 3 yrs ago) looking for a GT3 between 30k & 60k miles. They didn't exist. So I lowered my mileage expectations (hoping for something between 20k & 40k),... even that was hard to find. So I got a reality check for GT cars (that a lot of people don't drive them like I thought they would). I did not want to buy a 10k mile car,... but that's what I ended up with. ... I did that because I realized that mileage didn't really matter to me,... all the rest of my expectations became a lot more important (well maintained, my specific spec options wants, etc).

Finding the right 997 is not exactly difficult, it's just expensive, is what I have found over the years. When I knew I was going to want a 997 GT3, I talked with a friend (who ended up getting me my GT3) and basically asked him if I should be looking at a 981 GT4 since it would be easier to find one in great condition in an amazing spec. He told me he could find me a 997 GT3 still, they're out there, you just have to know the right guys with them, selling them and pay for it when you find it. You may pay a bit more than the market price, but you're going to end up with a great car. If you're ok with a car that needs some work, there's nothing wrong with that either, you'll be able to get it for below market. As long as you end up with the right car for you, then you won.
Regarding pricing and whether you should consider a 991 or a 718, the driving experience is just so different. I didn't believe it either until I drove one. I used to wonder why someone would pay $20-30k more for a GT3 over a C2S. Then I drove a 997 GT3 and it all became clear.
Whether driving experience is worth it or not, that depends. Let's take this as an example, would I pay $200k for a 997.1 GT3 with 5k miles compared to $150k for one with 25k miles, no. Because miles don't concern me, condition does. But unfortunately prices have went up and I think it's about whether or not you value the driving experience enough. I think my personal limit on car pricing is $100k. Having driven plenty of cars, I have yet to drive a car that was $150k that I thought was substantially better than one that was $100k. Actually, the 997 GT3 is the best car, for me, I've driven to date and I've driven more expensive cars. Now is an E30 M3 worth $100k+? I'd say no. That's nostalgia more than anything. That is BAT tax as well. People getting into bidding wars just to show they have more money and can pay crazy prices for it. E39 M5, is that worth $150k? No. Probably worth $30-50k I'd say? They were underpriced when you could get a clean one for $15k like many of my friends did. But a 997 GT3 was a $110k to start with. They are depreciated down to $90k, at one point were in the low $80s for a nice one. It's not like they were $50k cars new and are now selling for double. I think even at $90-100k the 997.1 GT3 is a very good buy. It provides a great driving experience. These sports cars are pretty irrational things, so it's more emotion than logic I'd say.
I think if you buy a 997 GT3 and have the plan of keeping it long term, the short term fluctuations will matter less, sort of like what Mooty said.

Fact is though, they're all great cars and every time you add a chunk to your budget, there are new choices worth considering. Not to say a 718 is better than a 997 or C2S is as good as a GT3, but there are always pros & cons to compare. Something to be said for a car that is 10 years newer at the same pricepoint that has similar performance specs. Just depends on what you want and what you plan to do with it. It's easy to get caught up in hype, the challenge is to remain SOMEWHAT objective! Oh and not to spend more than half the savings modding one to be more like the one you actually wanted.. because i've made that mistake.
Had one of those for a bit. Loved it. Fun on the street but overkill there and yet a bit boring on track compared to other toys. Arguably one of the better values right now for what it is though.. however for me the 991 platform is better suited for weekday driving than weekend. And I am a huge fan of PDK on a daily - for the fun car it's gotta be manual.

Agree with all points, and good reaffirmation to see them crystallized in someone else's words. Especially $100k being the comfort ceiling; I drive my cars and refuse to be a slave to the odometer. You can have a car with 100k mi that still looks/drives great so for me, if I can break even or just not lose my *** that's a win. I value the enjoyment more than profit... keeping a car for 20 years just to make money is stupid. Life's too short for that nonsense. Seeing more people treat these things like Ferrari's lately and it's a bummer because it's also skyrocketing the premiums people pay for low mileage examples. Then everyone thinks theirs is worth the same as the outliers. People getting too drunk on nostalgia or future resale of all these things and it's scary because eventually comes the market correction.
