I am that guy.
Had a 996.1 C2 w/ 78k mikes I bought for $18k on BaT in 2017. When it came time to get back into a Porsche I never considered a 996, went right to the 997 and 991.1.
While the 996 was a great value when I bought it in 2017, in 2020 it wasn’t.
I was seeing $25k-$30k C2 examples under 80k miles in 2020.
I spent $39k on my 997.2 C2 with 43k miles.
That extra $10k-$15k was money well spent IMO.

Short and sweet summary of how many feel about the 996. At least based on comments I've read over the years. Neither the exterior or the interior designs/styling brought much excitement. Then the IMS issue which was introduced with the 996. One positive though. For someone who wants a water cooled 911 in a bad way but with a limited budget, I think a well cared for 996 with maint. records and not hundreds of thousands of miles on it can be a good value.
On the good side, I had a 99 so the throttle was sublime and instant.

Really? Comparing and preferring a Rav to a Macan? Because of nanny’s? Enjoy. If driving in City traffic a Macan is a waste. I hope to never own a vehicle with adaptive cruise/lane keep. I walked to school as a kid too, so there is that.

Nah, the Macan S is an awesome SUV. My wife had one for 3 years. Lol, a Rav. I would not drive one. Don't like the way it looks.

I spec’d and ordered a 2015 Macan S back in March 2014 before I was even able to sit in or drive one. MSRP was $74,750 so I really loaded it up with full leather, Torque Vectoring, brushed aluminum interior trim and so much more. I went into it from my 96,610 mile 2003 996.2. The Macan is a great vehicle and I think the best in its class. I drove it for almost 3 years and 27,000 miles. I just couldn’t get joy out of driving an SUV, even one that performed as well on track as that one did. So I found my long time dream car, an 8,000 mile factory new condition CPO 997.2 GTS and its the car I will keep forever.

Reading this thread makes me feel a bit better. I'm a first time Porsche owner , and picked up a 09 C2S PDK 2 weeks back. It has about 35k miles (57k kms). I paid almost $50k , but keep in mind that I'm in Johannesburg , South Africa (where supply is alot more limited) and this was a Porsche Approved car. So far very happy , and I'm actually going to drive it alot not keep it parked. I think if you're hoping to sell the car within the next 2 years then there's no gurantee that it will appreciate further. However, you can enjoy the drive for a few years ......and maybe there's a nice surprise after that....

I can tell you this, I'd buy a 997.1 manual over a 997.2 PDK.
I'd also buy a 997.1 in just about any color other than black before buying a black 997.2.
But those are personal preferences.
