"Clean-sheet" means "made from parts we designed for this product", not "we have zero influences".
Oh, and the influence for the design trend that included the 928, Audi 5000 & Ford Taurus originated with (I **** you not) the AMC Pacer. The Pacer was the victim of a very unfortunate series of engineering decisions about the width, but if you squint real hard... (sorry, I know you can't un-see it once you see it)

That is absolutely wrong. In fact, the 928 design occurred BEFORE the Pacer. There is very little history on the 928 that I am not fully informed on, as that is my passion. That Pacer myth has been around for a long time. I also have it on good authority from no less than Tony Lapine's son, who knows a bit about this myth too.

Here's one thread with very good background - and note the comment from Kudensport (Hans Lapine): https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...nik-today.html. There is a lot out there, but you need to do the research.

OK, if we’re going there, the Porsche 914 was Motor Trends Import Car of the Year, the Chevrolet Citation X car won COY for 1980 and the Chrysler K cars won after that. And let’s not forget the Renault Alliance. Motor Trend sure knows how to pick winners!

Spot on Tom. Exactly how I see it. The 991 and 992 may have a lot of advantages over the 997 but whatever those advantages are they're not looks related as far as I'm concerned. Which is why I'll probably hold on to my GTS until it can't be driven anymore and can't be repaired for any amount of $ that makes sense.

Ah, I stand corrected! I had always thought that Dick Teague started the aero / flush trend, but it seems the designs were done in parallel. Thank you for the correction, I should have known that linderpat.

Now, did you know that the design of the 911 was based on the 1961 Plymouth Fury? Little known fact, but once you see it, you can't un-see it...

(That was a joke)

The Chrysler Horizon was a fantastic, worthy Car of the Year - just ask any mechanic from the era (they made boatloads on those cars). We had one, I was driving it as a teenager and had the brakes clamp down on the wheels and bring me to a stop- I don't remember the cause but I sure remember the smoke billowing from the wheels. But on the plus side, it had bright red vinyl splashed everywhere inside, and at least about 45hp...

I think that was the car that made my dad (an ex-Chrysler employee) finally give up on American cars for good.

FWIW, I ditched my 991.2 Turbo to go to a 2012 GTS, because I was not a huge fan of the 991.2 looks wise, but there were also $$$ considerations there as wife let me pick up a Perfomante . . . agreed car budget = Happy wife, happy life . . . .

The side view of the 992 is pretty good and definitely 911-ish. It's the front and rear - so square in front and so tall and bulbous in back... I think of the 911 as having a remarkably low height & low volume back end, and the 992 lost that.

OK, sorry but I just have to add something here, because like when was the last time Dick Teague was ever mentioned in a Porsche forum post?!?!?!?!?! Dick Teague was my absolute childhood hero, and the one person I really wanted to meet (while my classmates and the rest of the world wanted to meet Farah Fawcett). I had planned on attending the Art Center and working for an automotive company as a designer, but lack of money in my family meant I would "take a year off" and sell cars to save up. Well, I was really good at selling cars (AMC / Jeep / Renault for the first year) that I ended up working my way to General Manager real quick and spent 16 years in the automotive business. I definitely learned so much that has helped me the rest of my life. R.I.P. Richard Teague, a man with vision who did so much with so little!

They both look good from the rear. The 992 is much more mean and aggressive looking and much better in person. Still not something I would classify as so ugly I would not drive one regardless as to how it performs. The 992 below is a world class sports car with hyper car performance and a comfy daily driver.

Not a fan of the looks of the base and S 992. But the Turbo S is a beast and beautiful in my opinion.

Looking at the 992 from this perspective - the following descriptors come to mind for me:

Bulbous

Bloated

Incongruent

Design by committee

Un-Porsche like

A 911 diminished

This is the second time now you're saying something I never said. I just said they were ugly in my opinion they are and those pictures you posted are ugly as well. If you're going to quote me at least do it accurately...is that too much to ask?

Matter of taste. I actually prefer the 992 Turbo rear end. Menacing. Looks the part for what it is. The 997.2 Turbo looks a little soft and dated.

In person the 992 Turbo looks like a beast. I am not saying it should be your favorite car. I am just saying it’s kinda dumb or sour grapes to say it’s so ugly you would be seen in one.

The 992 in dark colors also looks nice in person. The 991 definitely looks soft and girlie. The 992 just seems really bold and imposing.

The best looking part of that 997.2 Turbo picture is the tail pipes. They are beast mode, but they are not stock. The stock ones are kinda soft and lamo.

I actually prefer the 996 Turbo in looks over the 997 Turbos. The front fascia on the 997 Turbos looks gimmicky and over done and I can’t stand the 997 Turbo inlets in front of the rear wheels. I like the clean hole.
