Blah blah 997.2 price blah - let's talk about value

I get your point, but the "lineage" of the Beetle to 356 is completely different than saying it's not clean-sheet. I guarantee you that the 928 development team deconstructed a bunch of front-engined, high-power sports cars to create a "lineage" for the 928 so that they weren't starting from "what the hell do we do?" on the project- everyone does (I say this as an Art Center grad who followed Grant Larson in the Transportation Design program, and as a professional Industrial Designer >> UX Designer). "Clean-sheet" means "made from parts we designed for this product", not "we have zero influences".

Oh, and the influence for the design trend that included the 928, Audi 5000 & Ford Taurus originated with (I **** you not) the AMC Pacer. The Pacer was the victim of a very unfortunate series of engineering decisions about the width, but if you squint real hard... (sorry, I know you can't un-see it once you see it)

Here's one thread with very good background - and note the comment from Kudensport (Hans Lapine): https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...nik-today.html. There is a lot out there, but you need to do the research.

I don't care what the performance is if I hate the way the car looks. Like a GF or wife that treats me great but is awful looking...not gonna be my GF or wife, The 991 and 992 are 2 of the ugliest Porsches I've ever seen. I never bought a sports car where I didn't love the way she looked. ....and never will. Tom

That is absolutely wrong. In fact, the 928 design occurred BEFORE the Pacer. There is very little history on the 928 that I am not fully informed on, as that is my passion. That Pacer myth has been around for a long time. I also have it on good authority from no less than Tony Lapine's son, who knows a bit about this myth too.
Now, did you know that the design of the 911 was based on the 1961 Plymouth Fury? Little known fact, but once you see it, you can't un-see it...
(That was a joke)

I think that was the car that made my dad (an ex-Chrysler employee) finally give up on American cars for good.

Not sure how anyone could see these as so ugly that would not be seen it and I think the new Turbo Cab looks remarkably better than the 997.2 Turbo Cab.
FWIW, I ditched my 991.2 Turbo to go to a 2012 GTS, because I was not a huge fan of the 991.2 looks wise, but there were also $$$ considerations there as wife let me pick up a Perfomante . . . agreed car budget = Happy wife, happy life . . . .

Ah, I stand corrected! I had always thought that Dick Teague started the aero / flush trend, but it seems the designs were done in parallel. Thank you for the correction, I should have known that linderpat.

They both look good from the rear. The 992 is much more mean and aggressive looking and much better in person. Still not something I would classify as so ugly I would not drive one regardless as to how it performs. The 992 below is a world class sports car with hyper car performance and a comfy daily driver.

Matter of taste. I actually prefer the 992 Turbo rear end. Menacing. Looks the part for what it is. The 997.2 Turbo looks a little soft and dated.
In person the 992 Turbo looks like a beast. I am not saying it should be your favorite car. I am just saying it’s kinda dumb or sour grapes to say it’s so ugly you would be seen in one.
The 992 in dark colors also looks nice in person. The 991 definitely looks soft and girlie. The 992 just seems really bold and imposing.
The best looking part of that 997.2 Turbo picture is the tail pipes. They are beast mode, but they are not stock. The stock ones are kinda soft and lamo.
I actually prefer the 996 Turbo in looks over the 997 Turbos. The front fascia on the 997 Turbos looks gimmicky and over done and I can’t stand the 997 Turbo inlets in front of the rear wheels. I like the clean hole.
