Hamann7 has been naive and Christer is exploiting this.If Wilbur has any sense he`ll leave this alone, - Christer can`t really lose this debate (being right and all that)

Notice how all the people attacking me are the 964 owners. Go figure...

Oh well, I'll just live happily in my own delusions then...

Just found this thread and it is too much fun not to jump in. Especially as I've seen/driven with Hamann7 and a little bit with Wilber.

My two cents is this is more about how you guys are saying things, then what you are saying.

Hamann7 can bomb the canyons. I think after years of driving them, he probably gets 95% out of his BMW, especially knowing the roads as well as he does.

My guess is most Porsche drivers get 85% out of their cars in general.

Now if you factor in both of these, the result is that Hamann7 does a great job of running with people, and in larger drives the number of cars is such that he keeps up.

I believe (and I think he does too) a driver who knows their 996TT and feels comfortable really pushing it will handle him, and the closer that driver comes to the limit of the 996TT the larger the gap. (The last 10% of 911 capability GREATLY increase speed through canyons)

Thus my personal believe is local guys in P turbos who hang it out, like Matt from By Design, would shake hamann7. And as for how anyone else would do... it is all about knowing the roads/track... Note: He is asserting he's a better driver, not that he has a better car.

Remember this above all else: Hamann7 is trading his 740 for a 996TT, so it is not like he's proclaiming it superior. He is simply winding you guys up.

Hey -- I know a way we can settle this...

Hey Dean,

Nice of you to chime in. I of course agree with what you are saying.

I actually had the opportunity to follow Matt up Latigo Cyn on the first part of the run. We both went at it and drilled the **** out of the canyon, and it was a lot of fun.

Matt was definitely faster than I was (after all, he has a lighter car with more than double the power)-- I would say I was about 2-3 seconds behind on the really tight stuff. Where he would kill me is the exit off each apex, where his car had gobs of power... You can ask him, but I thought I did pretty well all things considered. I think if I had a little more tread from my S-03's I would have maybe closed another quarter or half of a second or so. But he is a very good driver with an extremely fast 996TT.

I will definitely have to drive with him when I get the Turbo. I think once I get used to the way the 996TT behaves and feel out its limits, he will have some serious competition. But it's all in good fun...

Jeez you guys are a tough crowd, take it from someone who was there Hamann7 was hanging with the 996TT's and was actually in front of all but 1 of them.

Now don't go flaming me yet, at not until I finish explaining.

Hemman7 obviously knows the road VERY well or at least much better than the majority of people that were there. And anyone that knows how to drive canyons will tell you that knowing the road is worth everything.

Myself being one of the cars close up to the front, I can tell you that in NO way was I pushing very hard. In fact it was a very nice fairly well paced cruise but NOT an all out battle. Some of the drivers and I will not go into mentioning names but you KNOW who you are did things which were very unsafe and very unnecessary at the speeds traveled but to each his own.

Anyway back to the point Hemman7 did very well in his 740, and my brother and I were actually cheering him on as he trailed the 996 TT. Now put him into an actual sports car and he will really shine.

I absolutely agree that knowing the road well makes a huge difference. I am sure Hamann7 (?) will enjoy his 996TT RUF R when it arrives.

Only thing I know about the 740i is that it's a lardy barge that don't handle (I had one as a loaner for two weeks whilst waiting for my M5).
I know nothing of Hamman's abilities.

However my G'F has a Cooper S and it's massive fun to drive and regularly I embarras Subaru's etc in it around the lanes (where they expect to be far superior) where I live.

A truely talented driver on a road he knew well would be able to overcome the deficiencies of an unsuitable car to be able to better the lesser skilled in clearly superior machinery.
It would appear from the above posts that Hamann7 has such a gift and I would like to apologise for suggesting that his ability to keep up with 996tt`s and beat 964`s in a BMW 740i was BS.

I know it's easy to be skeptical, but in defense of my big bulky BMW, for a car of its size it has great grip and pretty sharp handling. Probably the difference between mine and the own AlanN had is that mine is the Sport package one, with a complete M-Technic suspension. It grips about as well as an M5, no kidding.

Better than anything else in its size range, I think. This includes S55 AMG, Audi S8, etc.

I love Porsches. Of course the Turbo is a better performing car, that's why I am getting one. What I really want to do is keep both!

Only reason why this thread got out of hand was because someone decided to make fun of my friend wilber, who is a really nice guy and always tries to help people on this board. Look, I am hardly a politically correct person, but to make fun of someone just because they don't write perfectly is really an unkind thing to do.

I hope this clarifies things a bit.

I'm new to the board, I had no idea who wilber was, and I was just joking around. You can continue to believe that I had malicious intent when writing that post if you want... have fun. The reason this thread got out of hand is because you claimed you and your BMW would beat a 911 on any track or canyon road, which people called BS on and for good reason. You still haven't backed it up.

Actually it may not be a good thread, but it is one of the best science fiction stories ever, I could hardly believe the high class of bs in this thread at least you guys are originals, sci-fi but original. I can wait for the sequel “ my grandma in her LeSabre against my 996TT”. Please!!!!!! who in the world is going to believe the 740i vs 996TT story!!!! Please don’t play with my intelligence, I guess I’ll go back to my 951 forum and keep with the real life, no bs! stories.
