2002 Porsche 996TT vs 1999 3000GT VR-4 (big video)
Modified 1999 3000GT VR-4 with upgraded turbos, fuel system, intake, exhaust vs a stock 996TT (I think). These runs took place in Atlanta, GA during the Nopi National Car show.
I know the story behind this video and the races, so I will post the reasons later on as to why certain things happened (don't want to spoil the video). I want ya'll to draw your own conclusions. I also know what times/speeds the VR-4 runs at the track.
Btw, this is a BIG file. 74.2MB to be exact. The runs don't take place until about 3 minutes into the movie. The first 3 minutes are Nopi footage. The file is 7 min in total.
Anyway, enjoy. I will answer anyone's questions that they have after enough people have seen this video.
74.2MB

What that is, is one of 4 possible things.
1) A rigged race just so some kid can shoot a cool video
2) A poser moron who doesn't know how to drive
3) A Turbo with serious engine, ECU or turbo problems
4) A moron who can't drive
I have no doubt that any well driven Turbo would smoke this dude to the next county.
Wilber's Turbo would be in another state. Trust me, I've been in it. With slicks, he's probably got a 10 second car as is, I'm not kidding. From a roll on, his car can probably destroy almost anything save for a few heavily tuned R1's or GSX-R 1000's.
As far as the VR-4 is concerned, at 1.07 bar or whatever the hell it is, he's running what, maybe 450 or 500 hp MAX? Couple that with a heavy car with an AWD system that is centuries behind the Porsche.

That last race out in the middle of nowhere looked pretty close. LOTS better than the two first runs.
I gotta give it to the 996TT driver for paying up. I cant tell you how many guys like that I have beat & then watched them zip off in the other direction without paying.

What sucks is I would of payed them if I had lost.

I know this story as well and there's a few quick things to note.
-this isn't a stock VR4 but had upgraded turbos from what I've seen posted and it's not surprising that it's possible he can beat the STOCK 996TT on the top end.
-the guy appears to have a tip and isn't launching for crap.
-add a $500 chip to the 996TT and watch that VR4 die
-I don't think the 996TT would slaughter this car with a chip but add upgraded turbos as well....

Okay, just a few things to add of note:
1. The guy in the Porsche lost the first two races because he was trying to hustle the VR-4 driver. The last race was legit, however, as it was for the bigger bucks.
2. The VR-4 ran a best of 11.7s @ 122mph at the track in the 1/4 mile. That is still faster than a stock 996TT.
3. The VR-4 had some mods as I posted above. Most importantly, upgraded turbos.
4. The VR-4 weighs in at 3700lbs while the 996TT weighs in at 3400lbs.
This was a real race as I know the guy in the VR-4 (I used to own a '97 VR-4 until a driver ran a red light and destroyed it). I hate to say it, but a 122mph trap will outrun a stock Porsche, tip or 6-spd.

Ummm... what about a stock X50?
Perhaps you are right but it didn't seem that fast on the video.
Apparently Craig in LA on this board has run 11.9 with an X50 Tip. A six speed should do slightly better than that with a good driver. So it is not far off.
All that guy has to do is put a FVD brain in the 996TT and that VR-4 would be smoked faster than a joint.
Not a big fan of the 3000GT, I'd rather have a Lancer Evo. But that's just me!

Either way you have to give that VR4 credit. I had few pals with these pretty built up and while they were running they could get the job done. Often they would move to something else because of failing rod bearings, mains and drive train issues. One of them even bought a 930 and went to town on that. Heck, a stock Z06 would give a 996TT all it wanted on the street. Don't forget that when the light turns green driver has a ton to do with the out come. Good to see the TT pay what was due. Like Michael I have been snuffed on the street for a couple of hundred. Even had a cat in a TA with NOS double or nothing me. When we blew past him he wouldn't pull over or even look at us. LOL, oh well.

It would be close. I mean, getting off the line is one thing (both are AWD). However, once you get rolling, the person with the highest trap speed will eventually win more or less. If one car has a 1/4 trap of 122mph and the other car has a 1/4 trap of 118mph, the 122mph car will 'typically' catch up with and pass the slower trapping car. Trap speed is usually an indication of horsepower to the ground given a certain car weight...
Because this race was so close, I can't say for sure if this was an X50 Turbo or not. Looked like the VR-4 won by half a car or so. If that Porsche in the race wasn't an X50, then an X50 Porsche would have definitely edged out the VR-4; no question about that. I would guess that this was a stock 996TT, honestly since the VR-4 was on pump gas (and probably not running 122mph traps, but closer to 117-118mph).

Provides some entertainment. It is a weird position for me as I used to own a modified 3000GT VR-4 that was putting about 420hp to the engine (about 340awhp to the ground). It was destroyed about 6 months ago when a guy ran a redlight and legally killed me on impact... So, with the insurance settlement/lawsuit I am now going to buy a 996TT. What better video to tie things together so to speak (for me at least).
By far the Porsche is the better car. I have driven both and there is no comparison. ANY car can be made fast with enough money. The VR-4 in the video had some rather serious modifications done to it to allow it to get up to the Porsche's level.
