Is it just me or does 'Hamann7' sound like he is a teenager? Not that there is anything wrong with being a teenager, but I really don't see from his last posts how this gentleman has been driving for very long. Comments about 'maybe it was just a fluke', 'maybe my car sucks' smacks of immaturity. Personally I think the 740 is Daddy's car and a 996TT is a long way off. Unless you are rich-kid of course.

Good luck with your canyon driving. Perhaps you know someone who owns a 964 that can accompany you on your Dad's next trip.[/QB]

Geez... I've been caught, I'm a teenager and the 740i is daddy's car! How did you know? Christer, you're such a moron. Did that mad cow beef finally get to your head, or were always this stupid?

Soon2Be, if you actually CAME to the Malibu run you would know for sure, now wouldn't ya?

Well....I am going to make a note here and it is going to have absolutely nothing to do with the arguing, but more to do with the initial topic at hand (remember that whole vr-4 vs TT discusison?).

Fellow TT owners...here are my sentiments regarding the street racing of any rice cooker...

There is nothing to gain in racing a rice burner. If you win...who cares? So you beat a little honda civic...wow...big man. If you lose...go home in shame for losing to a japanese car. You never know what those kids put under the hoods. You might be lining up next to a 10 second rice burner, and in the end for what? There is nothing to win and everything to lose.

In any case...just remind them that you can take a smooth turn @ 110mph while their car would flip about 150 times before it comes to a stop.

just my $.02

Whatever. Wilber and I are very good friends and I'm sure he'd be glad to answer any direct questions that you have for him, as I would do for him.

Of course his car is much faster on the straights or on enough road to let the Turbos kick in. His Porsche is one of the fastest in the country. He would leave your car in the dust probably even more than mine because the 964 lacks low end torque compared to a V8.

The issue at hand is if I can keep up in the canyons.

When you're out running canyons with Wilber and his car, you find that he is faster on the straights ... does that imply that he's NOT also faster in the corners?

I completely agree with you that drivers make all the difference, so my guess is that either you are Michael Schumacher, or Wilber is my grandmother.

I think that Wilber should tell us the truth - not just do 'what you would do for him'.

Thanks.

Please explain the use of 'low-end' torque in the canyons.

I actually find the 3.6 litre flat-six a very tractable unit compared to a lot of other cars. Have you driven one?

I'm sorry, but this is now a more amusing thread than the JimBob one.

Christer,

I think Hamann7 must be winding you up. If he truly, in his heart of hearts, believes that his 4000lb, 280 HP automatic is comparable to a 996 Turbo, you are trying to argue with a delusional wanabbe.

His worship of all things Wilbur is a bit disconcerting (I'm sure WIlbur is a heck of a guy with a nice car too, and I'm sure he doesn't need Hamann to speak on his behalf).

I agree with Wilbur - we should all get along - we should all have a little, friendly chuckle at those who believe the world is flat and that 4000 lb autos with 282 HP can corner faster than modded 996TT.

PS

Please don't be upset Hamann. Yes, I have a 964, YES your 996TT WILL be faster when you buy it, NO, your BMW will never be faster as long as my *** points to the ground.

My mother-in-law has a 740i. Real nice car for her too.

But if you are implying that a well-driven 740i would not be left trailing by a fair distance behind a well-driven 964 on the track or in the canyon, then I gotta tell you you are deceiving yourself. Sorry.

I remember reading an article in a European Performance Car magazine comparing a Ferrari, Porsche Turbo (and a few other exotic cars) as well as a Mini-Cooper. In the mountain regions of the test-drive the Mini-Cooper was sticking to the tail of the other cars. Of course it was left in the dust on the straight aways. The cars were being rotated amongst the drivers so it wasn't just one driver doing this in the Mini-Cooper. It turns out that some of the drivers enjoyed the Mini-Cooper the most since they got so much satisfaction pissing off the other drivers by sticking to their tails. Granted a Mini-Cooper is much lighter but it also has a lot less HP.

Corner speed has very little to do with horse power but a lot to do with weight. All other things being equal a lighter car will corner faster than a heavy one.
Stating the obvious but there you go.
Weight will always eat up HP, distroy brakes and hamper corner speed. A barge is a barge no matter how clever it may be and a simple light sports car will embarrass a supercar on the twisties.

Talking

Well that shows how little I know about cars But I figured since the BMW is about 150 hp more than the Mini that has to makeup atleast a significant portion of the weight disadvantage.

I`ll wager the power to weight ratio of a mini cooper S and a BMW 740i are very similar but the weight factor still favours the lighter car on corners. On a track I`d put my money on the Mini.
Didn`t mean to patronise everyone here but some people need a reality check.
Fact is Hamann7 has said something silly about being able to keep up with 996tt and being able to beat a (non standard) 964 in a BMW 740i -everyone knows this is BS but he won`t give it up.
