I posted an answer yesterday, looks like it's still "waiting for approval"?

The plenum is painted, ready to go in!

You know a guy has intellectual integrity when he simultaneously decries fat shaming while threatening to fat shame. Further proof that money doesn't guarantee intelligence, and vice versa.

Well if it's a Rolex kind of thing I can assure all I have no intellectual integrity. My rolex is fake. Even my Rolex has no integrity. And I have no money, blew it all on the car. And all the things that broke on it. Am I good to go on the fat shamming?

Finally clicked on this thread after giggling at how "Ben's plenum" was way too similar sounding to Ben's "perineum" (Google it if you must). Either way I was not disappointed in the entertainment value....

Dude, we've resisted using the P word for almost 100 poasts! We can't be learned doctors if we lose our discipline. Now, if you'll excuse me, it's time to open an "Imo000's hole plug" thread to investigate his free intake solution.

B-ran yer good to go as long as you don't actually push someone down a road of thought that isn't earned. I finally dug out from my self-induced p-car poverty. Refreshed interior & drivetrain is a costly endeavor but damn it's fun to product test.

Well I'm in luck! I don't push anyone down a road of thought, I just push them down roads, after I've tied them to a wheel chair.

I've been in self induced p-car poverty for a couple years. But it's mostly just maintaining existence, never really fun stuff. Alas, one day I shall do fun things to the car. One day. What were the interior and drivetrain refreshing that you did? And regarding Imo's hole plug, I think I'll pass. I have a weak stomach and don't care for graphic imagery.

Center console from drab gray to gt silver, same for the horseshoe, trim & gauge splash. Then a leather instrument cluster section & center console delete. Replaced some of the trim on the driver side rail, conditioned the leather half a dozen times to soften it up. Drivetrain items included a 997 shifter, ims solution, engine out refresh incl. AOS, motor mounts, peripheral hardware that could use replacing, oil cooler line with a pin hole leak, plugs, coils, plenum. Fun stuff so far is limited but solid H&R sways are great for sweepers, spacers to fill out the wheel wells & I'm conflicted on suspension. SLC is a western, truck-friendly town that rewards a bit of clearance. Anyhow, the updated version is a good bit more rewarding & it actually feels like my car after a bit of effort. Took a year and a bit of coin but it's a rewarding process.

Couldn't locate a trim piece to match the shifter so will eventually swap that out with a matching color piece. The legroom with the console delete is very nice - that was about the only thing that bothered me before while driving.

The interior looks fantastic! I've thought about doing the center console delete for more legroom also. But it would interfere with my idea of some day (read probably never) putting in a touch screen head unit with nav. I may take some cues from your interior refresh to spruce up the super blackness of my black on black interior, and paint some trim pieces. How are you liking the 997 shifter? I've driven a 997 S and I really loved the feel of the shifter. It could also be that mine is a bit worn out and old and should just be put out to pasture.

Also how much of a pain was it to drop the engine? I'm toying with the idea of maybe doing that as a winter project. Or a summer project if my AOS goes, but hopefully not a summer project.

Ty - just go piece by piece & be patient with eBay. I paid 10-20 cents on the dollar against the Suncoast prices for the big stuff & only broke down to pay full price for the trim strips & console delete. The 997 shifter is great. Either that or the GT3 shifter (metal bushings) or the Function First set (same) or Ben's shifter setup or the other race-oriented one I forget the name of are all good options from what I've read. The engine work was done by a shop and wasn't planned but elected to do it based on what they found.

I love this forum! I have stayed out of this for the most part. Ben, thanks for contacting me. I would love to be a test subject but figured for a test subject, shouldn't cost that much at this phase. Once it's all figured out I look forward to hearing/seeing results and by then might be able to get in on it. For those crying out for Ben's lynching, I would nicely say, get over it. We are all big boys and girls and if someone wants to take a risk with their own car and try this out before "R&D" has been done, that's their choice. I appreciate what Ben (and those like him) are trying to do. Parts for our cars are stupidly over priced so I say keep on keeping on!

See you all in Vegas in a couple months!

Thumbs up

stock to 82mm upgrade with Ben's plenum (stock plenum is upside down in this photo)
See https://rennlist.com/g/album/7341244 for more photos

I was able to install it myself within about 1.5 hours. I had to plug the extra outlet on the plenum and spend a whole lot of time adjusting the size for the intake hose that I had to purchase (
Amazon Amazon
was about 2 inches longer than I needed), but overall it wasn't too much trouble and everything fit well.

The engine took few minutes to adjust but after the RPMs got stable and engine warmed up I took it for the same route I take few times a week. Nice twisty road with few straights where I could really step on it and get a feel for it. I sure do love the results. It was much hotter weather than a few days ago, the butt dyno tells me that it is quicker and more responsive, plus it added a nice deeper note to the engine.

I can't put my finger on it, but the way the RPMs build up is different, so it feels a little bit like driving a different model of the same car. Price per performance and ease of install make this modification as appealing as Ghundo hack, if not better.

For both metrics mentioned (bang for the buck and ease of install), in my opinion, the Fister cans win first prize, and the Tarrett-type (read: indestructible/non-skeletonized) underdrive pulley comes in a close second. I would not have listed a plenum as a bang-for-the-buck upgrade based on IPD-type pricing, but for $300...hm.

*edited* because I was being an idiot...
