Awesome that the car is back on the road!
So many numbers are thrown around about the $ risk on 996's, it would be interesting to see what this particular 'catastrophic' failure ended up running...
I'd understand if you don't want to share any or all of the details, but I'd love to see the actual or approximate costs on:

I haven't gotten the shop's bill yet. Yes, they let me drive off without paying!
The shop owner was out racing at Sebring, so I'll stop by the shop next week and see what the damage is to my Mastercard. And, I still need to get the A/C system recharged (being a racing shop, they don't do A/C fills... in California, it's a whole 'nuther set of permits and licenses you need).
So, after it's all set, I'll put together an accounting of costs in a similar format as you have listed.
Should be next week some time.
Went for a 100 mile drive today, all seemed good!

^^^ I sent you a PM with some info.
In other news, at least my dead motor will be "famous" in the Porsche world. Regarding my motor (well, Jake's now, I guess):
I have asked Jake to ensure that only hushed and reverent tones are spoken when in the presence of this dead soldier.

Jake Raby: Ltusler, We'll hold this engine to be torn down in the class that you and 20- others will be attending at my Training Facility 18-21 February. This way we'll be able to validate the M# from the poster's engine, and tear it down piece by piece in front of 20 "verifiers". This way we can post the pics ..."

"I have asked Jake to ensure that only hushed and reverent tones are spoken when in the presence of this dead soldier."
I don't know if Jake can/will abide by that request - He is what he is and speaks how he speaks, everything else be damned! Then again, you did call it a soldier, so...
On a more serious note, it'll be interesting to see a step by step "accounting" of the process of your motors destruction (illustrated by photo's). And of course, best of luck with the "new" one. Way to hang in there - you've shown your true attachment to these fine machines!

- Used replacement motor: $9,000.00
- Shipping motor from Sacramento to San Diego: $200.00
- Installation labor: (remove my blown motor, strip off all components that needed to be transferred over, such as water pump, fuel rails, etc., install these parts on the new motor, reinstall motor): $1,440.00 . Less than I had expected.
- Extras: New AOS, new spark plugs, oil, filter, coolant, a few misc. doo-dads and what-nots): $349.48
- Recharge AC Freon: $114
- Lessons learned here: Priceless.
Now, from this total, deduct money received for sale of my blown motor (let me ask Jake first if he's OK if I post that), plus a labor credit for a spare 914 targa seal that I gave the shop owner for one of his personal cars, and net cost is under $10K total.
Time from day 1 (day motor blew) until I had the car back: exactly 60 days.
- Motor blew on November 30, 2014.
- Got my car back from the shop on January 29, 2015.

OK, great! I assume you will start a thread to document the motor autopsy? Seems like once you replace his motor and sell the core, you should come out ahead, financially.

Yes, I plan to do a tear down in my free time and that will take a while. Will update you guys when it happens but don't hold your breathe for now.
Will see what happens after that. Making money was never the intention anyway and I'll be happy to break even.

That ain't bad. I mean for what you were facing with a blown engine and factory engines being so damned expensive and all.
I think given the circumstances you did pretty good. 'course, everyone would have wished the whole experience would have never happened, but sometimes you know what happens.
Heck, last month I spent $5300 on my Turbo just replacing radiators, coolant, and then 4 O2 sensors, oh and an oil/filter service too.

^^^ Yeah, I saw that thread. Hey, how's the job hunting going?
I still remember the statement from the guy I bought the car from: "A car everyone wants, but few can afford to maintain." Has proven to be true. I've easily doubled what I paid for the car, in terms of PM maintenance and repairs. But, I regret none of it. This isn't just a car, it's a defining part of my life. Since purchasing it, I have met so many great people that will be life-long friends.
Overall, I'm quite pleased with the outcome. And, the input I received from everyone here has been fantastic.
A special shout-out to DTMiller, for his help in finding the replacement motor.
