Same. I knew nothing about nuances of the 996 prior to purchasing. The only thing in my head was that I wanted an aerokit '99-'00 in GR w/ SB interior and a 6MT.

Then joined RL not long after, and learned a lot, very quickly. The IMS/AOS/Clutch were replaced within first couple months of ownership.

Completely agree. And some of the comments you get on BaT are just ridiculous - like they are college students in their parent's basement. I think I have only seen one or two listing where the results of a bore score check, and that is really, really important with an M96/M97 car. And if you were to pay for a PPI on a BaT car and then have it bid up to a crazy price, you just wasted the cost of the PPI. I am with you in that I don't think I would ever buy anything on BaT or PCARMARKET unless the seller had a PPI done with DME and a proper bore score inspection (from the bottom, not the top) and the price didn't get bid up too far beyond market price.

The last 996 I looked at needed a bunch of work (about $8k worth) and had minor bore scoring...the PPI saved my butt.

Name of the game, and gave me peace of mind. It's an older German car, and there's no such thing as a cheap old German car regardless of the purchase price.

Looking back it was a risk buying sight unseen, so I consider myself lucky compared to others that have been shafted.

That it is...

If you can buy them right, you come out at market value once you have had the work done. I looked at a 996 recently that the owner overpaid for, then put another $5K into it, so his asking price is what he paid for the car + the $5k he spent on maintenance items (clutch, IMS, etc). He has had it for sale for 6 months...

996 Cab up now https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...-cabriolet-29/

Curious what that will do, I have a 99 cab with about the same mileage.
This one looks like my twin so I'll look forward to seeing how it bids out. Same mileage as mine and I did the IMSB, clutch, AOS, water pump, etc a couple months after I purchased mine in October. I was going to wait a year but with the lockdown and rainy weather I figured why not dig in. I spent $2k on parts and took my time doing the work but it was a surprisingly easy job with no hickups. Maybe not on BAT, but some of these well kept examples on Auto Trader and CL, etc can be well negotiated by those that can do the work themselves. By far the biggest scare with these is bore scoring. I cringe every time I start mine but then start enjoying the ride after it's warmed up.

Oh, and my guess on this one is $24,500.

Not mine.
Not cheap.
But good looking, in my opinion.

In today's market for 996 4s models that's a steal at $37k assuming mechanically checks out. Not a fan of the black stone guards or the GT2 wing, but that car on BaT is easily north of $40k and probably $45k IMO.

I am lucky I found mine when I did. I picked up my Guards Red C4S 2 years ago and it really was a steal. It took me a year to find one that ticked all the boxes, but it was worth the wait. Also, I don't see Guards Red 996's very often.

Wow that's a lady. Could do with out the Ferrari style shields and rock guards as someone said.

Is it me or do the headlight to bumper gaps not line up very well ?

IMS Sticker next to VIN tag. Poor aero kit, that's a nice ride ! Doesn't take much to total a 996 unfortunately. Bumper/hood n some paint. I bet the retail on an Aero bumper is silly though

I saw that a couple days ago. I'm curious what it'll go for.

I've rebuilt a few cars from co-part years ago and I've gotten pretty lucky but now performance cars have gotten so expensive with the youtube craze of rebuilding auction cars.

Reached out to the dealer in regards to this 911: https://www.mboffredericksburg.com/u...CA2999YS651943

It ticks all the boxes for me in regards to manual, convertible, and NOT silver. Hopefully it's actually available, usually they are sold in hours.

That aero looks like it could be a good pickup. I know the OEM body parts are expensive but at a glance that damage does not look that bad. The gaps on the doors and fenders look decent and the car overall looks like it isn't that beat up considering it was actually driven with 108k miles on it.

I was thinking the same thing...I'm just glad it isn't in the Houston area or else I might be looking at it this weekend. Ha!
