Bypro - Is the '01 Turbo Tip different from the '02 to '04 model Tips? I know there are some differences between the '01's and the '02-'04 models, but off the top of my head all I can think of are the interior upgrades (glovebox, etc, which I don't care about) and then a hotly debated (whether it exists) chassis-stiffness change.
My thinking is that if the limp home mode is triggered by some sort of non-internal-transmission problem, then you might be able to get this one sorted out cheaply. For example - searching the Turbo forum, I see that full throttle with a vacuum leak will trigger limp home mode. I had a Jaguar XJR that would go into limp home mode when a tiny vacuum line coming from the valve cover got clogged (got it cheap because the seller thought it had a major issue - took about 2 minutes total to unclog that line with just a small drill bit). If you could get the car for $20k and the tranny problem fixed for $2k or thereabouts, you'd have a 58k mile Turbo for $22k all in, albeit with a salvage title. I think you could drive it for a year or so and still sell it for around $24k-$25k. I would want to know about the incident that caused the total loss on it, though.

Thats a good idea, I know the Turbo MT is different from the non-Turbo, saw a rebuilt MT recently for $5,000. Clutchs are about double 996 non, axles probably different also. Maybe you could find the parts on 6-speed online, those ballers are always selling stock Turbo parts!

I just bought a 2015 Lexus GSF-sport last weekend for my wife, so I'm not in the market now, maybe after I sell my wife's 2007 IS350! Anyone?
I was delivering the 1st 2001 XKR to Craig T. Nelson in Malibu, going up PCH a couple miles from his house the message "Trans Fluid Hot" appeared in the I.P. This was about 8:30am so plenty of traffic prevented me from racing around & causing the issue. Called my Jag rep & they had no prior experience with that issue. Went ahead & delivered it to Craig since he required 9:00am delivery. 2 years later I bought a 1999 XJR with 100K miles, owner told me he had just had the trans rebuilt for $6,000 & deceided to buy a new XJR. I sold the '99 XJR @ 140,K zero problems except fuelpumps failed previously. We loved that XJR. By the way 2015 GSF has a 8-speed auto trans.

Yes the 2001 Turbo Tip was manufactured by one company & then 2002> was a different company, ZF I think?? If my memory is right, (disclaimer) 2001 Co had very few extra parts. So along with all the other 1st year gambles, I told myself to not consider a 2001 Turbo.

Three Wheelin'
2001 996tt with 58k miles on ebay with a buy it now of $21k. Guards red over gray. Tiptronic.
Porsche 911 Carrera | eBay
The bad news: salvage title and a transmission problem. Also needs an ignition switch, but that's a $12 fix.

Yep ^^. I haven't figured how to get rid of it. I posted it on CL a few times with no success. It is heavy too at 356lb, so it is sitting in the garage looking pretty.
