Very nice tribute to three generations of these great cars. By the way, when did you get the yellow calipers? Hadn't noticed them before.

Default 40AE Engine Issues

A prospective 40AE buyer contacted me recently with some questions about a particular 40AE he was considering. In our dialogue he was deliberating over the 996-era engine issues vs. a 997.2. He went on to ask whether I had any data on the IMS failures in the 40AEs - below is how I replied. I thought that the group may want to read my answer and comment on it. I am NOT mechanically inclined and profess no particular knowledge of engine issues or their causes. At the beginning of this thread balefire at one point had listed the few 40AEs with IMS failures, but with the number of cars now in the registry the data is becoming more interesting.

"By no means is this statistically accurate, but I'll share with you the data that I have.

In the registry I have 444 40AEs with known limited edition numbers. I also have several hundred for which I am lacking limited edition numbers, although some portion of them are likely already in the "numbered" list but I don't yet have a way to cross-reference them (meaning I'm missing key info like VINs). If I had to guess I've located somewhere between 800-900 40AEs of the 1963 that Porsche said that they produced. Keep in mind that I only know of engine issues if the owner/seller mentioned it or if it showed up in a CarFax or AutoCheck report. With that it mind, I have records of 14 IMS failures and 11 other engine replacements or complete rebuilds for unknown reasons. From what I can tell NONE of the IMS failures were recent, which is consistent with one point of view, which is that the IMS issues don't show up once the car has been driven more than 40K-50K miles. The other view is that the IMS issues don't arise if the car is actually driven, not sitting in a garage all the time.

I don't think that I shared this article with you - you really should read it. Phillip Raby is a recognized Porsche expert who has written of the virtues of the 40AE. To me it puts a lot into perspective as to the gripes about the 996 engines. http://philipraby.co.uk/porsche-boxs...nes-the-truth/

Let me know if you need anything else. Good luck with the hunt

Default 40AE in San Antonio

Hi, gang:

Need your help identifying a couple of 40AEs in San Antonio. The first car was apparently in for an IMS retrofit and other maintenance at DBC Tuning in Oct 2013. Here's the posting on DBC's FB page about it: https://www.facebook.com/dbctuningll...64405976964339

The second one was detailed by San Antonio Mobile Car Wash back in Dec 2006: https://rennlist.com/forums/concours...ion-911-a.html

The 40AEs in San Antonio in the registry are as follows:

No. 0392 - owner TBD (previously sold by Ken Batchelor Cadillac and or Sewell)
No. 0418 - owner TBD (previously owned by 67FJ45 and recently sold by Jordan Motorcars)
No. 0931 - 911sanantone posted of owning this - not sure if still owns
No. 1018 - sat40th911 posting of owning this - not sure if still owns
No. 1229 - owner TBD (most recently sold by DFW in Dallas but previously sold by Batchelor/Sewell in San Antonio)
No. 1452 - owner TBD (once owned by PeterK of 6speedonline)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Ted

Greetings from Estonia! I found this thread by accident just surfing around to get some info about the "40 Jahre" - and hit the JACKPOT. Awesome work done gathering the list - and my car is already on the list #0051. I'm the 3rd owner of the car and loving every drive with it. Today it has approx 123.000km on it.

Welcome! I found your car on stuttcars.com. Post some pics because the only pic on that site was of your numbered plaque. Great to have you aboard.

Thanks for posting the info. I very much appreciate it when folks point out these cars so that I can make sure that they're listed in the registry. It's been a couple of months but check out p.22 of this thread - I reported on the "deaths" of no. 0829 and no. 0941. Since that time no. 1366 has also passed. There are more in the registry like those but I only have their VINs, not limited edition numbers. I suppose that the message is for us to enjoy our cars while we can!

Well that's what I get for searching 829 instead of 0829. Yes, parts for sale, I purchased the interior rocker scuff panels with the clear 911 emblems. Hopefully they will be in better shape than mine!

Hi Ted
I had the calipers done yellow when I had them refurbished, I like the bit of colour they give to the car.

Default Minichamps 40 Jahre 911 - 436 061070

Hi, everyone - for those among us who enjoy collecting 40AE memorabilia I thought that I'd mention that apparently Minichamps has announced the release of a 40AE model, which I'm told by a Minichamps seller in Germany is to be available this summer or fall. The model number is 436 061070. Here's a pic from one seller's catalog - no actual photos of the model version are available yet.

I spent a long time looking for a model replica.
I ended up getting a C4S model which replicated the front bumper, but not all those other things...
Please let us know as soon as this model is avail.
I will be one of the first in line!

Also, here is a pic of my latest mod.

Random question that just popped into my head: Has anyone looked at how many of the 40AE cars are right-hand drive vs. left-hand drive? Noticed the 30th, 40th and 50th cars in churny's photo shoot were all RHD and it made me wonder what percentage are RHD vs. LHD.

While I haven't seen anything that definitively says how many RHD vs. LHD versions were produced overall, here is a good resource as to the number of cars registered in the UK, all of which I believe were RHD (thanks to our friend moorhouse) - http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle...e_911_40_years

Folks on 911uk have said previously that 125 RHD were allocated to the UK, and this website seems to bear that out. While not exactly 125 it's close. Note also that the RHD cars in the registry are found in these countries:

Singapore - 0268 and 0333
Australia - 0611 and 0612
New Zealand - 1388
Hong Kong - U135 and U612

All of these countries have some relationship to the UK, which makes this understandable, and explains why the cars in Japan and China are LHD (no similar UK relationship). Also, all of the 40AEs that I've seen from Europe and the Americas are LHD.
